DDR vs DDR2 What's the deal w/new timings?

It's been a while since i've had to shop for a new system......if i go a route where i will need DDR2...what kind of timings are good?

I know lower the better...that's about as far as my knowledge goes for these timing deals i.e: 2,3,3,5 3,3,3,4 etc etc

Just so we can narrow this down...i'm looking for 1gb sticks; what kind of timings should i be looking for from a high performance stick of 1gb DDR2?
 
Actually, i'm holding out until AMD M2 socket comes out which will support DDR2. With that said.....what kind of performance timings should i look for?
 
DDR2 has a much higher latency than DDR. If you insist on DDR2, at least hold off for a bit, get a motherboard with DDR and DDR2 slots. You'll get more bang for your buck with DDR for now. The timings will be lower, and you will probably get similar bandwidth.
 
is DDR2 at 5-4-4-9 equivilant to say a DDR 2-3-3-3? or something along those lines?


or is DDR2 another animal all together


PS: i won't be purchasing this RAM until probably Jan or Feb timeframe. It will be going in a AMD M2 socket board which will natively support DDR2.
 
I thought M2 wasnt coming out until early 2H 06. So why buy the memory until you need it? The tech will be further advanced and have better speed/timings. Also, I thought AMD was going to make standard timings at DDR2 667mhz.
 
ddr currently has tighter timings
ddr 2 has higher operating frequencies and lower voltages.
I really haven't come across any tests that prove a difference one way or the other, as most new intel boards are ddr2 and all amds are ddr.
 
The deal with DDR2 is this:
It is a standard that solves a number of electrical problems that makes it difficult to go beyond 2 DIMMs or 1GB memory with DDR. What happens is that one usually have to go to less aggressive timings, clock and/or command rate. Curiously, benchmarks show that this doesn't hurt AMD much in actual applications. Intel P4 OTOH does suffer significantly when you expand ram beyond 1GB. I assume that is why Intel were in such a hurry with DDR2. So DDR2 is a solution for faster large amounts of ram. Not primarily a tech for faster ram, as is usually assumed.

How does DDR2 work? DDR2 modules uses memory at half the speed that DDR use. That's why power and heat is down. That is also why response is so slow. In order to keep up bandwidth, DDR2 then serves the bus with double internal width.

So DDR2 is essentially slower memory on a higher capacity bus.
