I have 2 pc's that use Dual channle.

I have two sets of 512mb DDR 400.

what do the timmings mean;

2.5-8-4-4 ?

2.5-6-3-3 ?

Which timmings are faster?

do the equate to like 420 mhz or something like that?

Did you mean 2.5-4-4-8 and 2.5-3-3-6?

The faster is always the better but your mileage may vary depending
on the Ram Module, the FSB of the motherboard, and compatiability
with both.

Not all ram is created equal, even from the same Manufacturer or
in the same Product batch.

It's DDR400 or PC3200, it runs at 400MHz DDR.

Actually it could be DDR400, DDR500, DDR600.
(most likely DDR500 - PC4000)

The 2.5-4-4-8 clocks @486MHz
The 2.5-3-3-6 clocks @400MHz
