DDR Ram questions and Recomendations

If this is the wrong forum let me know. I decided to put this here because my main question is about RAM and not motherboards.

Am i the only person who doesn't understand the whole DDR ram system? I have been looking for a good down to earth FAQ about it, but i can not find anything to help me. The anandtech FAQ on the topic was helpful, but short and it left out alot of things i have questions about. Can anyone explain how you go about choosing which ram to buy and why? Any links to previous discussions would also be appreciated.

My more immediate problem is i have an XP 1800 that a friend gave me Linky and i need to find a mobo/ram combo for it, preferable in the FS/FT forums. But i can't decide which ram to get with it. A good mobo and Ram suggestion would be helpful as well, but it's more important for me to understand it.

You'll want @ least some quality DDR 2700. If you let us know what MoBo you have that would help Meanwhile you can study up HERE

Thats an invalid link, looks like your message was pasted into the link box instead of the actual link. I would like to know the site you wanted to put there.

Im not sure which board i want to get yet. I would like to spend less than 100 bucks for the board and memory, or less than 150 at the absolute most.

Thanks!

I would suggest getting some quality PC2700 memory as well. That will leave you an upgrade path to a 333MHz FSB Athlon XP later down the line.

If you are interested in doing any overclocking, then perhaps some quality PC3200 memory might not be a bad idea. It's not that much more expensive, but it will definitely give you some overclocking headroom.
