OK, I'm gonna be upgrading my motherboard (Intel SX440BX-2 to Abit NF7-S), processor (Pentium3 500MHz to Barton 2500), and RAM (AK-Byte 256MB PC100 to ??? lol). I have decided on 512MB (no dual-channel yet, as I plan on adding another stick eventually), and PC3200/DDR400. But I don't know what brand/model to get. Here are my choices (from NewEgg, that cost under $100)

  • CORSAIR 512MB PC3200 VALUE SELECT. VS512MB400 DDR RAM - OEM - $85.50
  • GEIL DDR RAM 512MB PC-3200 Value 400MHz Ultra- CAS 2.5, 2T Command - $87.00
  • Buffalo Technology 512MB 6 Layer PC3200 DDR Memory Module CL 2.5 32X8 (Winbond Module) - OEM - $88.00
  • GeIL Golden Dragon Value Series DDR 512MB PC3200 400MHz MODEL# GD3200-512V - OEM - $90.00
  • CRUCIAL MICRON 512MB 64x64 PC 3200 DDR RAM - OEM - $93.00
  • OCZ DDR PC-3200 Premier Series Memory 512MB MODEL# OCZ400512P - $98.00
  • Kingson 512mb (2x256mb) DDR400 PC3200, Model KVR400X64C3AK2/512 - $101.00

Which one should I buy? Price doesn't matter, so I just want the one that is the best. BTW, I'm not gonna be overclocking.

Tough call between Micron and Buffalo. I've never owned Buffalo, but I did have Micron (not the 3200) and was pleased with quality and tech support. I don't think you'd go wrong with either.

I like Crucial ram and have always had excellent customer support even when one of my sticks went faulty (after 3 years) and I couldn`t find my receipt,it was no problem for Crucial to send me a replacement within 3 days .

So far, it looks like Crucial and Buffalo are the winners. I have till like December to decide, so I'll keep checking back lol.

Im using 2x256 of GeIL Golden Dragon and they are working perfectly. Currently running at 2.8v 214FSB and default timings, never bothered to go higher as I dont like stressing my CPU.

i have corsair xmx 512 PC 3200, and think it's great, but XMS costs more than any of those.

i voted buffalo cuz it is only $90/ 512 stick and does XMS/mushkin timings at 200 mhz (5-2-2-2). also OCs to 225-230 at cas 2.5

I suggest corsair xms or mushkin, remember, you get what you pay for. might be a little more expensive but works great. Also, samsung is good only if the PCB is made by samsung. I suggest these b/c there is no doubt in my mind that you will overclock. You will have the most success with these memory sticks. I just bought the Mushkin 512MB level 1 pc3500 for $160 and works great.

Also like to point something out.. i dont know if anyone else noticed this, but shady06 suggest buffalo when he uses Corsair... LOL something is a little shaddy here!!!

Hyper X, great overclocking, good timings, competitive price too.

Buffalo is good too, if you snag some CH-5 chips, but some do better than others...

Drop Crucial as it's CAS 3.

my buffalo runs the same timings as my XMS and even OCs a little better. i was fortunate to get the XMS back in may where the 512 stick of pc3200 was only $94 but i would go for the buffalo ANYDAY seeing hoe buffalo performs the same, OCs better, and is so much cheaper

BuffaloTech in sig system runs 2/2/2/5 timings to 222MHz, 2.5/2/2/7 to 230MHz, best mem bandwidth at Tras 7.

More expensive Corsair TWINX 3200C2 pretty much sucked by comparison.

Buying memory by brand name can be an expensive mistake. Compatability issues between memory controller and memory brand/chips is much more important than brand name.

You have a good point, i cant say much for buffalo b/c i have no experience with them. But, memory is more of a luck of the draw. I have a crucial pc2100 cas 2.5 and am able to run it @ cas 2-2-2 5 FSB 166Mhz. My samsung pc3200 cas 3 does cas 2-2-2 5 @ 180Mhz. Just got a Mushkin pc 3500 cas 2-2-2 and have gotten it up to only 190Mhz on my Abit KR7A (kt266a) all air cooled(reached the limit of the motherboard).

Like DUNKSTER said, brandname means nothing but success rate and customer service does, which is why i suggest these companies.

I would have added crucial to my list, but it was very unusual that this one clocked that high. I think i got really lucky on that one. I usually get only 15Mhz on crucial ram( at cas2, i never overclock anything higher then cas2 latency, i love low lat!!!).

So you guys think I should go with the Buffalo? It is winning the poll so far! I read a couple reviews, and they did like the buffalo, so I guess its good ram.

lol I see that you run a barton 2500+ at 3200+ with buffalo 3700 ram (shown here i think). If you don't mind me asking, what settings (like voltage fsb multiplier etc (whatever u gotta change pretty much), cause the last time i oc'ed was back with the AMD K6-2s, had my 450 to 550, so excuse my n00bness), and what HSF are you using? Cause that sounds like a nice overclock!

All I know is GEIL sucks. I just got rid of mine and got some Kingston really cheap.
