DDR or PC150 SDRAM

I am looking to upgrade to an Athlon 1.4GHz, and looking for a motherboard. I am trying to decide between getting a DDR board or a SDRAM board. I have two sticks of PC150 memory, and I rather not spend more money buying DDR even though they are cheap. So my question is, will I see a huge difference between using DDR vs. my PC150 SDRAM on a 1.4GHz Athlon system? Is it worth spending another $100 for 512mb of DDR for the increase in performance?

DDR isn't all that much faster for today's apps, so I'd say you'd do just fine with your PC150. Of you had to make a choice and you didn't already have any RAM, then I'd recommended DDR by far, but since that's already taken care of you won't notice a big enough difference to care. If you can pick up a MB like the ECS SIS-based board that has both SDRAM and DDR slots on it, then you can eventually migrate to DDR if you feel the need. Until then, you'll do just fine with your SDRAM.

I second that! Go with a board that has both SDRAM and DDR slots and at the moment the best one is the ECS

Another vote for the ECS 🙂

Yeah, what is up with the ECS board? I have been reading up on some posts here, and it seems people seem to LOVE the ECS board. Something about how hard drives access speeds are faster and the system is overall faster..? Can anyone confirm, and give me a little more info on this ECS board.

i use a kk266, and i love it. its an sdram board, but i have had my fsb up to 170mhz. im havent run any benches on it, but i am sure that is is faster than any ddr solution at that speed. its also relatively inexpensive.

Flippy, your memory bandwidth will be similar to PC2100 @ 133MHz. I also have a KK266 and run my FSB @ 167MHz to back up the comparison. However, my PC2100 @ 152 cas2 leaves the SDRAm bench in the dust.
