When can I expect to start seeing DDR motherboards based on the AMD 761 chipset from manufacturers such as Gigabyte, Asus, Abit, Tyan, etc. ? (Hopefully before Christmas
Also, how much do you think these motherboards will cost when they appear?

I am hoping I can buy one before Christmas as well. I don't know about prices, but I think the prices will not be much above prices of current KT133 based motherboards, because finally, there will be more competition. But DDR memory will proably be at a little more that SDR.

I'd be surprised if the 761 based motherboards were not readily available by Christmas.

Unfortunately, they aren't currently available in quantity because of a potentially serious bug in the AMD 761 chipset. While it is possible to redesign the board to work around this bug (as AMD has done with their latest reference board) most board manufacturers have opted to wait for a new revision of the chipset which is due to reach them in the next few days.

I expect cost to be quite high initially, but I would be surprised if any charged more than $200 for one.

I think Via Socket A chipsets will arrive in Q1. Even ALI DDR chipsets will probably beat Via to market.

Based on AMD's past chipset record, would you reccomend waiting for the VIA Socket A DDR chipset?

Stealth,

Based on AMD's past chipset record, would you reccomend waiting for the VIA Socket A DDR chipset?

I think both AMD and ALI motherboards will be faster than Via based motherboards. The reason is that AMD and ALI boards will be synchronous (FSB and memory bus running at same frequency), but Via will be asynchronous.

As far as past chipset record, you can argue that Via, AMD, ALI, Sis, Intel suck, and you could make a convincing case.
