DDR Memory question..

Hi, I'll be buying a KT266A-based motherboard when they come out with 3 or (preferably) 4 DDR slots.

Here's the thing. I want to buy 512MB PC2100 at the same time, so I was thinking getting 2x 256MB PC2100 Crucial non-ECC, unbuffered. But if I do that, I won't be able to add more memory later right?

So here are my alternatives:
1) Buying 1x 512MB PC2100 stick. Infineon has a 512MB PC2100 CL2 on pricewatch for 99$US+shipping.

2) Buying 2x 256MB PC2100 Crucial ECC and Registred CL2.5 (I'm pretty sure those sticks can be run in CL2) for 43.19$US each, plus shipping.

Which option would be the best performance-wise? Option #1 costs like 20$US more, but I'll be limitted to adding only one stick in the future. Option #2 is cheaper, but would be slower since it's ECC and Registred. But on the other hand, with Option #2, I'll be able to add 1 or 2 more (depending on # of DDR slots on mobo) sticks of DDR ECC and Registred memory...

What kind of performance hit can I expect with Option #2 compared to Option #1?

What do you think?

Thanks

Do you really need all that ram? What do you do with your computer?

I think 512MB is plenty for most people, including myself.

I heard win98is bad with lots of RAM!!!

No, it is not "bad", you simply need to make an adjustment to the vcache if you run more than 512MB. It's in the FAQ's as well. 🙂

just wondering, but why in the world would want to have more than 512 mb of ddr? that is a whole lot of ram. that will probably last you a long time unless you specifically need that much ram.

sorry, I should've specified a few things...

I'm using Windows 2000 Professional so 512MB right now would be excellent. Will probably upgrade to Windows XP in a few months.

And I'm not talking about adding memory within a 2-3 months, but in like 6-7 months.

I'm worried about blocking myself by getting 2x256mb regular sticks since I won't be able to upgrade easily in the future.

And yes, 512MB should last me for a long time, but remember, about a year ago, 128MB was more than enough... and then came Win2k that pratically required 256MB, and now WinXP will be very happy with 512MB... who knows how much memory we'll need in a year?

So, back to my question, Option #1 or #2? Would Option #2 be much slower than #1 ?

I'd like your opinions about this, not about 512mb is more than enough or why Win98se can't use more than 512mb effectively, thanks 🙂
