DDR Memory question

Trying to re-use some old components:
MB board currently working with P4 1.6A/400FSB and PC2100.
MB supports 533 FSB.
MB supports PC2100 and PC2700 memory.

Question : Will PC2100 memory I have work with P4 2.4A 533FSB CPU or I need PC2700 memory?

This is non-gaming machine so no performance issue here, I just need to do CPU swap and for some reason I can't get P4 2.4 to work.

PC2100 memory is fine for a 533 FSB, only real reason to use PC2700 with a 533FSB would be if you were going to overclock.

Does it mean that my P4 2.4A brand new out of sealed box is bad?
I can't even get to the BIOS.
Any ideas?

The 2.4A is a Prescott-core CPU and your board needs Prescott support to run it. Even many newer boards don't have that capability. I hate to throw a drowning man an anchor, but my suggestion if you want to keep the 2.4A would be to get dual PC3200 modules and a motherboard that properly supports a 2.4A, or maybe bail the whole kaboodle and grab a retail-boxed AthlonXP 2400+ ($72 including heatsink/fan) and an nForce2 motherboard such as a Shuttle AN35N Ultra ($54). Your power supply will need an ATX12V power plug to run an AN35N Ultra... hopefully it has one?

If you have a very old AGP card, you may also need to get a new video card. Anything from the GeForce era onwards should be compatible with today's motherboards, though. Hope that helps a little 🙂

I did not think about Prescott core.
I tested it with 3 different boards, all of them working with 1.6A
MSI 845PEMax2
Asus P4SGX-MX
Soyo SY-P4VGM

Are any of these boards supports Prescott?
Will BIOS update help?
I can start any board with P4 1.6A and flash it.

I have ATI All-In-Wonder RADEON card, it should be OK for this setup as well as 160GB+80GB drives.

I think I found answer myself:
none of these boards support P4 2.4A

What board should I get for business type PC with this CPU and no gaming?

You would be better off returning the 2.4a prescott and getting a 2.4Ghz northwood on the 533mhz fsb, then you could keep the motherboard and ram you have now. As mechBgon said, even a lot of the newest boards don't support prescotts, they also tend to run hotter and slower at the same speed as a northwood. If you would still rather keep the prescott here is a decent motherboard that will support it http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-474&depa=0

I did not realized that this CPU is PRESCOTT when I got it, I would definately get a Northwood.
It is too late now and I need correct MB for this CPU.
I was hoping to use what I have. I will look over weekend.

Can I still use PC2100 I hAave with this 2.4A or it will be like running truck with 1.5L engine?
I am just trying to re-use old components.

Maybe I'm a bit rusty, but isn't INtel's naming:
A = 100/400 MHz FSB Northwood
B = 133/533 MHz FSB Northwood
C = 200/800 Mhz FSB Northwood
E = 200/800 MHz FSB Prescott

Or did they change this recently?

I don't know about this but this P4 2.4A CPU is a Prescott

Thanks everyione for help, especially mechBgon
Yes, it was Prescott support issue.
Picked MSI 865PE Neo2-P board from the local store,
Installed processor and PC2100 memory and processor works just fine.

At least I learned something today 😉

😎

Plus now you have some leftover parts. I call 'em "computer spores" because they'll eventually germinate into a whole new computer if you aren't careful :Q

It always happened... I still have 4 more machines running in the house used by my wife and kids.

And it all started here: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=1320889

I did not put heatsink clamp correctly after I cleaned my P3-733 which was working just fine before.

Looks like I burned the P3 processor a little so it lock-up time to time.
To re-use at least 512MB of PC133 memory I decided to get P4GX-MX from local Microcenter for $39.99
It was $50 at newegg, so I got from newegg processor only.
Guess what? I got 2.4A prescot.

When I was unable to get this combo to work, I got a couple spare P4 boards from my buddy - still no go.
I stripped my son's P4 1.6A system just to find out what is wrong.

Now see post #1 of this thread 😎

It was a long journey and I am not done yet.

I still can't get P4GX-MX to work with P4 1.6A and PC133 SDRAM, it works only with PC100 or with PC100+PC133 combo as well as with PC2100.
I hate to return this board in because it's really good for internet browsing and occasional excel use.
It supposed to replace P2-233 with roots through the floor.

Now see post above....

I can't seem to find any information on a P4GX-MX, I'm assuming it's an Asus board by the name, and probably some form of 845 chipset. Not sure why it won't work with the PC133 sdram, does it post with it, or do you get nothing at all?

I made mistake: correct board model is P4SGX-MX

Memory I have is crucial CT32M64S4D7E
Memory reccomended by crucial is CT32M64S8D7E
So looks like problem is here.
