DDR-Memory Question

I am about to dress me up with a brand new PC (P4) but I'm lost
about this DDR-thing.

If I buy 512Mb DDR, do I have to buy 2 x 256, of same brand (Dual-DDR-thing) ??
or could I buy 1 stick of 512Mb and double the RAM next month ??

What name would you recommend on the memorysticks (compability with Linux) ??

P4 2.4 Mhz / 800 FSB
Abit IS7-E
1 Gb RAM (2 x 512) (PC333)
OS: Libranet Linux

I a chicken about the PC400 memory. I have read that other users are having some trouble with them (Kernel & OS-specific a.k.a Linux).
 
first: dual channel DDR, unlike RDRAM, is not required to start a system. you can put in one stick of memory into a dual DDR mobo and run the system without any probs. however, if you put two sticks into the designated memory slots, your system performace will increase.

since you are buying things new, i suggest buy 2 sticks of memory instead of one big one

2 sticks of 256mb would be fine, depending the purpose of your server.

and these kinda stuff are hardware, so i don't see why it should matter if you run winblows, spleenix, or even DOS
 
If you want to run in dual channel mode then yes, you have to buy two sticks, but they don't have to be from the same manufacturer. Most people just buy from the same manufacturer to get sticks with similar performance and overclocking characteristics. If you think you're going to add 512MB next month, then I would suggest that you just buy one 512MB stick now. You'll be running in single channel mode until you pop the second stick in, but that's really not a big deal.

Typically, compatibility is more a problem with the motherboard. I've never heard of memory that works with one OS but not another. Some popular memory manufacturers are Corsair, Kingston, Crucial, and Mushkin.

You will want PC3200 at a minimum, maybe something faster is you plan on overclocking.
 
I'd do more checking on Dual Channel and flavors of Linux. I'm pretty sure I saw a 'flash' over at ARS about problems with dual channel. My first thought was that the OS shouldn't matter but I'd check. I think that maybe Abit has a BIOS fix for Redhat but some others still had 'issues'.
 
definately get one stick of 512 first and then when your ready get a second (preferably identical stick) to slapp in there.

they dont have to be though, I've got 512 + 256 in my P4b.

they work great, major speed difference in loading times.
corsair and crucial are some of the best.
