DDR memory, does the brand matter ?

looking at getting a new box setup with a ddr motherboard - probably EPOX EP-8KHA+.

I've noticed, as everyone has, that memory prices have shot up recently. Even with the 15% AT discount @ cruicial their ddr memory is significantly more expensive then mwave's, kingston and some others. I assumed I'd just get my memory from cruicial but now I'm not sure.

So -- does it matter ? Is all DDR memory basically the same ? does the quality control of some of the other players change with the speed 2100 or 2400?

any help is appreciated.

thanks.

I don't think it really mattery unless you are going to tweak the memory timings or overclock.

Just stay away from the bottom of the barrel and you'll be fine. Hard to mess up with Crucial IMO.

Is Samsung "bottom of the barrel"?

I just ordered it last night. It was cheap and I need some.

If it is crappy, maybe I can stop the order.

yeah... crucial has raised prices 260% since i bought 3x256mb PC2100......

when the price difference between crucial and other brands was 10-15% crucial was worth it... but with the delta approaching 50%, i hesistant to recommend them....

thanks!

well, looks like this now:

MUSHKIN -- 512MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM SPECIAL, $ 151
Cruicial -- 512MB DDR PC2100 ? CL=2.5, $152.99 w/ AT discount
Mwave - 512 MB pc2100 DDR, $138

but every once in a while I see some no-brand for about $20 less ... but probably not worth it ...

decision made -- cruicial !

i have used corsair even the generic corsair stuff without any problems. i have heard crucial is good to 168 front side bus at Cas 2 and corsair is good to 170. if that is true there isnt much difference.

I hope the Samsung is okay stuff; got it pretty cheap.

Prolly go Crucial next time. Alot of guys here like it.

Remember that ac delco slogan? IF YOUR NOT ASKING FOR IT, YOUR ASKING FOR IT!

Crucial all the way!:D

Kinda waaaaaaaaaaaay toooooooooooo expensive now, considering i paid $60 for 2 sticks of 256MB PC2100 at crucial.com with the 15% discount. Imma wait until it gets close to the $40 mark and hit the 1GB barrier, if it never goes down guess 512mb will have to do.;)
