does anybody of u know if u need a new DDR motherboard to support this type of RAM, which will be the next-generation DDR RAM, or if u can use DDR II RAM on a normal DDR motherboard???

I don't think anyones knows for sure, But my guess you need a new MB to support this new memory unless the chipset already supports it.

I agree, probably a new board since the ram will be running a lot higher.

They both have different pin count, so yes.. you need a new mobo.

What the... I just saw that. What's DDR-II? (do you mean PC 2100 DDR RAM?)

the first types of DDR II will have speeds of 100 MHz, but that means that the bandwidth of the DDR II will be 400 MHz. After a while we will see memory bandwidth of up to 6,4 GB/s...

maybe because DDR II will be so similar to DDR, except for the bandwidth, that they just call it a sequal, just like movies, but after all 2*2 is 4, so double data rate * 2 makes sense...

no no no no...

sorry, guys, but DDR 2 is just DDR SDRAM, running at 200mhz! it's true! it will arrive probably end of next year. I think all it needs is a mobo that supports DDR SDRAM and 200mhz (without overclocking obviously), though I'm not sure.

That SDRAM will be PC3200, and finally, after DDR 2 will come QDR. it was supposed to run in the same port as DDR, though I suspect that the chipset may need to be newer to allow for the quad pump.

EDIT: LOL, it appears noone even read that link posted above. it repeats exactly what I just said :p

"DDR-II will reach a clockspeed of 200 MHz, and will offer no less than 3.2 GB/s"

But the pin count would be 230 for DDR II, i think, while DDR will have 184(?). This would mean a new mobo, right???

"But the pin count would be 230 for DDR II, i think, while DDR will have 184(?). This would mean a new mobo, right???"

where did you get this new pin count?

yeah it's slightly modified (it's really not called SDRAM according to that link) so that it has lower latency. ohh ahh, it's still SDRAM.

"it seems that the Low latency version of DDR-II will be based on EDRAM"

"The beauty about the EDRAM concept is that it adds very little SRAM and thus die space to the chip, to be more exact only 1.4%!. Those SRAM buffers contain the row data, and the controller can read those buffers instead of the sense amps. While the SRAM buffers are read, the sense amps are free for precharge and refresh operations. In other words, those SRAM buffers can eliminate latencies like the precharge latency."

there you have it, according to that link, there will be a low latency version. who know's, it might just be a seperate version of DDR SDRAM, like VC SDRAM (virtual channel SDRAM) is to SDRAM.
