DDR Chipsets

I was thinking of ordering my 1ghz Thunderbird today but i read this:

Date: September 05, 2000 08:53 AM

Looks like the wait is finally over and the DDR chipsets will be mowing us down next month. Here is more info from Ace's:
DDR chipsets for the AMD platform are starting to ship this month
Volume production of DDR chipsets from AMD, VIA, and ALI will start around end of September, beginning in October
Currently AMD's DDR chipset leads the other two in terms of production: Gigabyte will release a DDR board in October based on AMD's DDR chipset
AMD is giving ALI technology transfer to help ALI in DDR K7 chipset
ALI will release DDR chipset for K7 first, in "limited quantities" by October, and an Intel DDR version will follow later
VIA, on the other hand, will release an Intel DDR chipset first, with the Athlon DDR chipset to follow about a month later
Gigabyte, Asus, and MSI will all have DDR boards out in October
DDR Chipsets/Motherboards In October

So..What is the big deal with ddr, and what does it do? Should i wait for it?

thanks

ddr is a ram tech that allows data to be passed twice on one electical cycle, on both the rising and falling edges. what this means is that twice the data is moved in a given amount of time compared to the standard technique. it means that there is enough bandwidth so that your processor and all your cards can stay as fed as possible with data while running your computer, significantly increasing performance.

ok.. i was thinking of getting a kt7-raid for raid 0...but will there be a raid mobo with ddr coming out soon?

Does anybody know if the DDR boards will have the ability to change the clock multiplier like the KT7/A7V? It seems as though AMD is making sure that their CPU's clock multiplier can't be changed with currently shipped CPUs.

I think most of the DDR chipsets will be supporting the 133 bus speed, which will help us overclock the bus and get added performance. 🙂

actually all low cost oriented ones will not have the 133mhz bus, becuase they will sell the most, as will the low end version of the Mustang. these CPU's will be running at 100mhz for sure, and many of the high end DESKTOP CPU's (think T-Bird) will also run 100mhz.

this means that many motherbaords available to us will be 100mhz FSB, with the probable exception of ABIT, ASUS, and a few others. there will also be 133mhz FSB Variants of the high end desktop CPU, which have their multiplier ready for 133mhz FSBs.

then the server version (the MUSTANG) will be ONLY 133mhz FSB.

what I'm wondering is if you have your FSB at 133 (which SOME motherboards will support without problems like normal FSB overclocking on an EV-6), will you be able to run your DDR (or normal) SDRAM at 166mhz? that would be wicked fast man..

as for overclocking multiplier switches, it's too early to be sure of anything there..

I'll wait patiently until Asus and Abit both have their DDR boards out so I can evaluate them properly.

My next system is coming in may or june 2001.

Gonna be over 1Ghz, 1GB of RAM (DDR) and a NV20-spring refresh version (NV25?)

Yes there will be DDR boards with RAID, the announced Iwill ALi based mobo for one. Not sure how long the wait likely a month or two.
Ya I agree that if you already have a good system wait; if you're upgrading get DDR with new chipset mobo and a new CPU.
