DDR CAS Latency Question

I'm buying some PC2100 memory, but most of the RAM I see for sale is actually CAS2.5 latency. I was wondering if you guys actually purchase CAS2 memory, or do you just get some CAS2.5 memory and change the timing in the BIOS?

Thanks,
Spaceloaf

You should be able to find plenty of PC2100 CAS2 memory.
Forcing a lower CAS in the bios can cause same nasty problems.

I was looking around and I did not realize how many PC2100 chips are rated
at CAS 2.5.
I still can find some CAS2.
Kingmax has some and I have heard good things from friends about it.

lol
welcome to the forums
The rule of thumb says: You can run a brand name memory (like crucial, samsung, corsair, etc) rated CAS 2.5 @ CAS 2.0 without any problems.....

I have used OCZ PC2400 and Corsair PC2400 rated at cas 2. The both run 166MHz+ at cas 2. I have used two crusty generic sticks of PC2100 rated at cas 2.5. The both ran fine at 133MHz cas 2, however I did not try running them on a higher fsb. I also bought a stick of Crucial PC2100 rated at cas 2.5, it also hit 166MHz+ at cas 2. I would just find the cheapest Crucial you can, unless you plan to run higher than 166MHz, then get some Samsung.

You can change the CAS and other settings in most BIOS's.
If you get CAS 2 memory, you can change it to CAS 2.5 w/no problems.
But sometimes if you change CAS 2.5 memory to CAS 2, it might not do it.
I got some Mushkin level 2 (CAS 2-2-2) at 266mhz, it runs CAS 2.5 at 440mhz with no problem.

<< Thanks for the replys. I saw some cheap Samsung CAS2.5 RAM at www.googlegear.com, so I think I'll get some of that. >>

I have some CAS2 Samsung for sale, and I'm sure it is cheaper than Googlegear! It is PC 2100 512mb CAS 2 ram. The spd is cas 2, it is not 2.5 at 2. Also it is ECC. If you are interested email me or pm me!

"official" CAS2 DDR is available. You just have to find it. Newegg has some cheap Dane Elec stuff that's CAS2. About $125 for 512MB PC2100 CAS2. I've used a few sticks in builds for other people and if set to "SPD" in BIOS, reports as CAS2, as advertised.

🙂If your getting samsung memory make sure it has pcb made by samsung its called original samsung some have samsung chips that aren't on samsung pcb .

Hmm, damn, googlegear doesn't seem to give any detailed info on the RAM. Now I'm not sure how quality the RAM really is. Is $53.50 too cheap for good memory? Can anyone recommend a "trustworthy" vendor to purchase from? I know that lots of evil stores like to rip people off on memory...
