DD-WRT versus D-Link Gaming Router...

Hi all,

I have a D-Link Gaming Router that I've used for a long time... I have been reading about the DD-WRT firmware upgrade you can do for a Linksys/Buffalo/etc device and I'm tempted to get a cheap one to test it out. Does anybody have any experience between the two, or perhaps can give me some insight? I play pc games mainly and my ping is good though, my ping has always been good... so I'm not sure whether it's the router or not. I like the options for the ability to VPN into my house and things like that, so it would be a welcome feature!

Much obliged for any help!

Thanks!

I use DD-WRT on a Linksys WRT54GL. It has more features than D-Link could ever offer with their consumer routers.

I'm running two WRT54G's 100 miles apart, both with DD-WRT.

They're stable. UPnP is sometimes buggy, depending on the build. The built in PPTP server only works in certain builds (unfortunately, in the latest build that works, PPPoE is broken, which I need on one connection). In the mean time, I only have one way VPN. I've also encountered minor bugs. For instance, in v23 SP1, the DHCP status page fails to display clients. That's been fixed in SP3. For a $35 router, you get a ton of functionality, but you will encounter bugs.

I play pc games mainly and my ping is good though, my ping has always been good... so I'm not sure whether it's the router or not.

Unless a router is overloaded, there should be < 1ms difference between any two routers...

the d-link gamming router is fantastic, i tried dd-wrt on a linksys wifi-g router.. and it froze regularly... more than once a day.

the d-link gaming router is probably the best router ive ever used, and that ive tried prolly 40 different models over the past few years.

I was in the same situation. I had a Zyxel X-550 which ran really well with good QoS. Then I got bored and also I wanted to run a VPN server on my router. So I sold my Zyxel and I bought the Linksys WRT350N to run dd-wrt. This router has a really fast processor (BCM4705, the fastest of the Broadcom processors right now) and it's been running very well. A lot of the performance issues in terms of both QoS and VPN throughput have to do with the processor of the WRT54G(S) routers not powerful enough. WRT350N really changed that in that now we can run dd-wrt on a fast processor. The only thing is the storage link doesn't work in dd-wrt v24 beta yet. It's still being worked on. But eventually we'll get there. Also, Thibor is working on porting HyperWRT to the WRT350N also and he's aiming at full storage support including NTFS r/w too. If you want a fully functional firmware right now, I heard Sveasoft has everything worked out already so if you're willing to pay $20/yr for the firmware you can get it too. Hope that helps.

By the way, for VPN server, if you're willing to spend a bit of time setting it up, OpenVPN gives much better throughput than PPTP. I have OpenVPN server working on my WRT350N and it's great.
