I DID IT! IT WORKS NOW! THANKS EVERYONE. HERE IS WHAT I DID FOR FUTURE REFERENCE
Problem: I had wired internet through my router but wireless internet was MIA, and I couldn't access the Gui of DD-WRT cause I didn't have a local Gateway.

SOLVED: First, I hard reset my router by the 30/30/30 Rule. Then, I went into the network connections folder, right clicking lan->properties->Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)-> properties. I checked "Use the following IP Address and filled this out.

IP Address:192.168.1.99
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Use the following DNS server addresses: Preferred=192.168.1.1.

That got me back into the GUI by typing 192.168.1.1 into my web browser. However, just as I thought my problems were over, I was faced with another speed bump. My internet stopped working(through my router's lan port). I went to setup(in the GUI), and under Router IP, I filled this out.

Local IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway:192.168.1.1
Local DNS:192.168.1.1

Then, I went into the MAC address clone tab under setup and copied the current PC address. Finally, I went back into network connections folder->Lan->properties->Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)-> properties and set everything back to automatic. That fixed everything!

I'm a layman when it comes to general computer stuff. Somehow, I got the bright idea to flash DD-WRT micro onto my WRT54GS. The flashing worked fine due to an excellent list of instructions, but its been a nightmare ever since.

The problem I'm having is complicated. I can't access the internet unless I'm plugged in through LAN. If I'm plugged in, and have access to the internet, I can't log into the WRT GUI through IE or Firefox or any other browser. Sometimes, I manage to randomly access the GUI through random restarts(Restarting everything, and pushing the reset button on my router for 20 seconds), but when I'm finally able to get into the GUI and change settings, I have no access to the internet. Wireless(internet) doesn't work even when the lan(internet) works.

Can anyone here help me troubleshoot? I've spent the past day googling every possible solution, and I've tried some simple ones, but some of what I've read is way over my head. If some kind soul shall help me, I will be eternally grateful!

P.S. I'm using a cable modem.

PPS Whenever I try to ping 192.168.1.1, I get no response. When I do Ipconfig, it gives a very strange number as my default gateway. 208.120.188.1(on my ethernet adaptor) ? It gives a blank under tunnel adaptor. Here is what it says when I ipconfig.

Do you know what version of the WRT54GS you have? Sorry, I was looking at the wrong DD-WRT chart when mentioning version 2. I should have said version 5 (with 2MB flash).

When you state that you have to connect to LAN, I assume you mean the cable modem and PC both connected to the LAN ports? If so, that would explain the 208.120.188.1 (mindspring.com on the tracert) as that's the IP from your cable provider, which would normally go to the router (the router usually defaults to 192.168.x.x format).

Edit: (I see that you did - missed that the first time) Did you perform a hard reset on the router (either before or after flashing)? (I think you have to hold the reset button in for a few seconds to accomplish this but not sure 100%).

-I have v6, thats why I'm using the micro version.
-I get internet by connecting to the router through a lan cable. The modem is connected to my router. My computer is connected to the router. This is the strange part because in all my searches, people who are missing their default gateways can't get internet access through the router, but I'm getting access perfectly fine!
-Yes I reset the thing a thousand times. I followed the 30/30/30 rule(Which is to hold the reset button for 30 secs when its on, keep it held while you unplug it for 30 secs, then continue to hold the reset button while your return power for 30 secs) on the dd-wrt website. -The linksys router has 1 WAN and 4 LAN ports.

Just to mention that I did something called a winsockxpfix. I have no idea what it did, so that might have messed up my computer.

The reason that you probably can't access the router is that your cable modem is giving a direct IP to your PC (since they are both on the lan ports - the router will never get an IP from the cable modem since it requires the wan port to get the IP - AFAIK). Since they are esentially on a different IP range/subnet, it won't let you connect to the router (i.e. You can't connect to the 192.168.xxx.xxx range with an IP of 208.xxx.xxx.xxx like you have - which is by the way, very pingable right now).

I would assume that if you disconnect your cable modem (entirely), reset your router and pull a new IP with your PC, you'll get a 192.168.xxx.xxx range IP with your PC and you can work with the GUI just fine?

Did the router work fine before you flashed it (I have to ask, lol)?

When the cable modem is connected to the WAN port, did you unplug the cable modem from power, wait a minute or so and then replug?

Disconnect the Router from the Internet

Reboot every thing and see if you can access the Router from the computer.

Only after it works connect the Router to the Modem using the WAN port (Internet Port).

If you are on cable Internet you might need to clone the computer's MAC address to the Router.

That's why I asked if the router was working "before" the flash to DD-WRT. I had a friend's router that would not work (after a system upgrade at the cable office) until he cloned his PC MAC to the router.

-Yes, the router was working perfectly before I flashed it.

-I forgot to mention this before, but I was having the exact opposite problem at first after I flashed the router. I was able to access the gateway just fine, but I couldn't connect to the internet. I did the mac copying thing and changed some random settings, but it didn't help.

Then, somewhere on the internet, I read that I needed to reset my router's mac address because DD-WRT overwrites the stock one. I did that. Here is where I read that information. http://www.scorpiontek.org/portal/content/view/82/32/

I don't exactly remember if I did anything after that, maybe I did but forgot, but shortly after I followed those steps, I could access the internet through wires just fine. The problem then was that I couldn't access the GUI anymore.

Do you guys think its a problem with my router, my computer, or my internet service provider? Thanks.

Edit:It doesn't let me /ipconfig /reset or /renew if that helps.

I think the 169.xxx range is the "self assigned" IP (i.e. when your PC can't get an IP, it defaults to this range). Looks like the router isn't giving you an IP.

If I were guessing, I would say that your router is slightly sick right now. I wonder if you manually set you IP (of your PC) to the 192.168.1.xxx (xxx = 100 for example) right now with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and a gateway of 192.168.1.1 (I assume that the router defaults to this), if your internet would work (or at least you could access your router).

I would try re-flashing the router. Download some (different? Try Tomato, or perhaps a newer or older version of DD-WRT), connect the PC to the router (only, don't connect the cablemodem) using a LAN port. Power down both the router and the PC. Power-up the router, then power-up the PC. See if you get an IP (192.168.x.x) from the router using IPCONFIG /all. If not, then manually set a static IP on the PC to 192.168.x.200 (which x is either 0 or 1, depending on model/brand of router), and try to access the router's GUI, and then reflash.

Version 6 of the GS router only has 2MB flash, so you can only flash DD-WRT Micro. There are no Tomato options with this router as it's very limited.

Ok, I managed to get to my default gateway by manually setting the gateway/subnet/ip/dns. Thanks to your help engineer. However, I can't connect to the internet now! One problem solved and another one creeps up.

Also, whats the difference between the Router Local IP Address and the Gateway? Should these numbers be different or the same? Thanks for your help!

Router local IP is the number that you assign the router on the local network - i.e. 192.168.1.1. The gateway is the IP number that the router goes through on the internet (i.e. the server on the internet that the router is sharing). The gateway is usually assigned by the DHCP of the cable company while the local IP is assigned by you (or defaults to something like 192.168.1.0 or 1.1).

Based on your first post, the router should be showing 208.120.188.1 for the gateway.

LOL. Did you do anything else after you manually assigned the IP address, subnet mask and gateway to your PC? If you didn't do anything and the internet works, sounds like DHCP serving is turned off on the router.
