DD-WRT Repeater not getting strong internet connectivity

I'm running a WRT54GSv4 as a wireless repeater using DD-WRT. It works wirelessly and wired. I can connect to my downstairs WRT160N which is connected to the internet, and it works, but the connection is really slow and occasionally cuts out completely for a few seconds.

I was hoping that using the repeater would increase the signal strength to the router downstairs but it seems to be getting the same slow awful connection as using just my wireless card.

Perhaps i'm not understanding the reason to use a repeater? I'm looking to use my upstairs router(repeater) to get a better connection strength to the internet. Am i going about it the wrong way?

Repeater is Not an Amplifier. The idea is to put a repeater in the middle of the way where there is still a good signal so it can receive it and transmit the good signal further.

If the repeater is put in a spot where the signal is very weak it has nothing to Repeat.

Well, that was a pretty quick answer. Good to know, Thanks! I guess i'll have to find another spot for it.
