I just bought a WRT54G router for my VOIP service primarily because it has QoS. However, the linksys qos doesn't seem to be working correctly.

I decided to do a search and came across a program by the name of dd-wrt

However, they say that their firmware will not work for v5.0. Is there any alternative just as good that will work or am I setting up something incorrectly that my QoS doesn't work properly?

THANKS

WRT54G v5.0 is an effort by Linksys to save money on the units produced. They have very little RAM and run a very small, customized OS called VxWare. You cannot run any 3rd party firmware on the WRT54G v5.0 to my knowledge and I believe this is due to the tiny amount of RAM.

I'm not sure how to troubleshoot your specific problem using the Linksys firmware, but a possible option might be to take back the WRT54G and get a WRT54GL instead (or look for a WRT54G pre-5.0). The GL is exactly the same thing as a WRT54G v4.0 (you can use 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT), yet it carries with it a $20 price premium over the regular G.

Be careful not to get the v5 of the GS model, because it too runs vxworks.
