Hi,

Received a new Dell pc [for a friend] added new graphics and cleared all crap/installed necessary soft/updated it.

Receiving DCOM error attempting to start upnphost service with arguments - #10005.
XP Pro SP2, residents are NOD32 and Outpost firewall, apart from normal services also starts diskeeper. LAN connection.

This is the only system error in the log ? I?d really want to get rid of it before giving him the ?sorted? machine.

Thanks in advance.

The upnphost service is the host process for universal plug and play support. The error may just reflect the fact that the service is disabled. Go to control panel -> administrative tools -> services, and look for upnphost on the list. If it is disabled, enable it (assuming you want it to run, otherwise you can safely ignore the system error in my experience). If it is not disabled, then something else is wrong. UPNP support depends on the SSDP Discovery Service being already up and running, so check its status as well. If it is disabled, enable it (assuming you want it to run). If both services are enabled, and the error still occurs, it may be benign. I have seen reports that certain DCOM services will throw this event if they attempt to start a service that is already running. Most of these reports come with an instruction to install a service pack, so if you are fully patched then this probably isn't the cause.
