If a person is granted permission to legally migrate to a country, works there for ten years and has no convictions in that country, they should be automatically accepted for citizenship (at no additional charge) unless they choose not to for some reason (such as their country of origin does not accept dual citizenship and they want to keep their citizenship there), and that choice does not affect their permission to stay there.

IMO the scenario I've put forward involves a person who has demonstrated sufficient commitment and interest in the country they've moved to, they've contributed in the form of productivity, spending their earnings there, taxes etc, to warrant allowing them to have more of a say in how that country is run through voting etc.

The main reason for my idea is what's happened recently in the UK with regard to the Windrush scandal and how EU migrants are being treated by the UK government with regard to Brexit, and IMO individuals who have shown that much commitment to the country they've moved to should be allowed citizenship by default and would have been allowed to vote in the EU referendum, because frankly IMO it's their country too and they've contributed as much if not more than some natives for whom there is no question over whether they're allowed to vote. I think it would also reduce conflation of legal migration with illegal migration in the minds of the populace.

Thoughts?
