DC Moral Dilema

Would it be wrong of me to put some DC fun on the comps I'm building for my g/f's dad?

Should I tell him -- he isn't very computer literate so he would probably just think it would leech his power. I could REALLY increase my production with this. 😀 I've heard the horror stories regarding this type of activity, but it seriously isn't a threat here.

On the Stats-Aholic ECCp-109 program, how do you make it default to 'Permanent Internet Connection' when it starts up?

Please, *PLEASE* do not install clients on computers you do not own without getting permission first. Don't allow your desire for increased output to cloud your judgment. This type of activity is NOT accepted at TA.

Even if it is someone you know, it is still bad news. Would you want someone putting software on your computer without your permission?

Make your best pitch, and if it works, it works. You can always hide the client once you get permission.

I agree with MereMortal.
Just explain it to him as best you can & see how it goes from there. Or ask him to try it for a couple of weeks so he can see for himself how it works.

If you haven't started building it yet, you could offer him a reduced rate (if you're charging) or offer to build it so long as he runs the DC program on it.

Are there versions of ECCp that instead of scaling to CPU usage will turn completely off when you're using the PC, kinda like how SETI screensaver mode works? This would probably sound more acceptable than the always on thing.

Sounds like a good plan to me 🙂

Do not under any circumstances install any DC programs (or any other programs to be honest) on a computer you do not own without permission of the owner, if it's official it's best to get written permission for it, as many will tell you here it could get you seriously in trouble. PM me if you want any additional info.

If he's not too computer literate then explain to him how it works and get him a bit more savvy, he might thank you!

And to set it to Permanent Connection edit the eccp109.ini file and change PERM_CONN=0 to PERM_CONN=1.

This is how i would set the ini file for uninterrupted and invisible use...ONLY with permission:

START_MINIMIZED=1
PERM_CONN=1
NO_TRAY_ICON=1
NEED_ACK=1
#SEND_INTERVAL=hh:mm:ss
#RUN_TIME=hh:mm:ss
#DP_SERVER_HOST=www.statsaholic.com
#DP_SERVER_URL=http://www.statsaholic.com/eccpproxy.pl
#PROXY=host😛ort
PRIORITY=LOW #options LOW, MED, HIGH
EXT_TIMING=0
SCANDISK_PAUSE=1
DEFRAG_PAUSE=1
TASKMAN_PAUSE=1

That will start it minimised, will auto send, and will pause when TaskManager is open (so he won't see 100% CPU usage coming from ECCp) and will also pause on defrag and scandisk for uninterrupted use 🙂

Remember, get permission, nothing (even DC and the TeAm) is worth what could happen if you don't get permission.

ECCp should (and in all known cases does) give up CPU time to ANY other app that requests it, so long as you keep it at LOW priority as per my ini file above

Hmm, that scandisk/defrag pause will be helpful even for me. Can you script it to pause when I go into other programs as well? I prefer to pause it when I go into games, but forget to resume it again when I quit. I've lost too many DP that way. =/

EDIT: Just read next post. I know these things scale, I've just always questioned how good they are at it. It seems like leaving it running will cause jumps sometimes when I'm gaming, but no serious hits.

I've had Seti and ECCp running together on my PC as well as games, and i notice no change in games over having just ECCp or just Seti or nothing running, so i always just leave them on, cos i'm the sorta person who will forget to turn it back on (and i have done before!)

I don't think there is any way of getting it to pause on any other programs, or none that I have found, and nothing i use has been slowed by running Seti or ECCp 🙂

Confused

I use the ECCp duplaxing screensaver here at work on several machines in which I want no possible effect on the user. Its a program that can run most DC projects alongside the normal windows screensavers. It only works in Win NT/2000/XP though (has some trouble in windows 98).

I would also recomend the folding@home screensaver, if they have a broadband connection. In any case, I think a screen saver is the way to go... nice to be sure that there will be no user impact.
