DC: Is anyone using Windows 2000 Pro or Server in HyperThreading mode?

Could you please describe the steps you used in installing Windows 2000 for HyperThreading? My SETI HyperThreading machine with Windows XP Pro is working but I'm not happy with Windows XP Pro. If Windows 2000 is capable of using HT, then I would rather install Windows 2000 in this machine.

I'm using NetBEUI in my home lan and Windows XP pro doesn't want to work after installing SP1. I'm forced to use IPX. I rather not use TCP/IP for my home lan. I'm just using single NIC now that I'm using a router at home.🙂

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I'm running HT in XP Pro and i didn't have to setup anything, i'm guessing it would be the same way for Win2kPro.

Are you using NetBEUI with your XP Pro? I got NetBEUI working on my Windows XP Pro before installing SP1. After SP1, it just doesn't work anymore.

TCP/IP, if set up properly, offers fine security for a LAN (not to mention that it's compatible with everything - Windows and otherwise). I'm using it, and have never had any problems with security or otherwise.

As for Win2k with HT, I've heard that you need SP3 for it to be used properly (it supposedly works otherwise, but the task scheduling doesn't always work well since Win2k thinks you have a true SMP machine, IIRC), but haven't had any experience with it myself, so can't comment from experience.

ICK!

What's wrong w/IP? And...I thought MSFT was yanking Netbeui?

Yes Microsoft is yanking NetBEUI. They didn't even put a sign that allows you install it in XP without a warning. You will have to manually install it and find it inside the CD. I am using it with a bunch of Windows 2000 computers. My network print server is currently setup for NetBEUI. It was having problem getting an IP assigned to it by my DHCP.

The only thing you have to do is make sure HT is enabled before installing Win2k. It will then detect your system as a "dual cpu" and install the correct files automatically.

badthad Are you saying you have successfully setup an HT enabled Windows 2000 Pro? Is that with original Windows 2000 CD or did you used a slipstreamed CD with SP4? When I was reading the info from Microsoft.com, I could only find references to HT on Windows 2000 server family. I do have Windows 2000 server, but using it limits my ability to play games with the machine.

Have you tried running SETI with your HyperThreading enabled Windows 2000? What's your average daily workunits per day?

how much better is HT at crunching WUs?

Currently with XP Pro, this machine is producing as high as 16 workunits per day.🙂 But I can't print since my networked print server couldn't work with the TCP/IP protocol. It doesn't want to work with the IP assignment given by my DHCP server. I could only make it to work with NetBEUI protocols.

I'm using a 160 GB harddrive connected to the onboard Promise IDE RAID port of an MS-6758 motherboard.
I'm using this machine to make this reply.
