ChessBrain is a virtual chess supercomputer using the processing power of Internet connected machines.
Our members contribute to ChessBrain by running a small program on their machines, which analyzes chess positions for the ChessBrain network. ChessBrain is a perfect project to run alongside any other project, as it doesn't use much CPU time (about 5%-10% overall CPU time per day) as the "units" are very small.
If you're interested in joining us Download and try the client software. There is a community Forum where you can get help, make suggestions and participate in experimental projects. The peerNode client can be run as a Screen saver, Graphical interface or a Command line. An always on Internet connection is required to connect to the Super Node to receive data. Our team name is TEAMANANDTECH (no spaces), your team ID will be the part of your email before the @ sign. We are currently in third place and climbing.
To learn more about ChessBrain you can read about the project in the July 2003 issue of the International Computer Games Association Journal and in the September 2003 issue of the Linux Journal. Also, please visit us at the Anandtech DC Forums and read about all the Anandtech DC projects at Team AnandTech Home Page. Making this all possible:Carlos Justiniano is the founder of Chess Brain and Colin M. Frayn is the author of ChessBrain's chess capabilities.

The Rothberg Institute For Childhood Diseases is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for children suffering from Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). We operate at the intersection of modern biology, computer science, and chemistry.
The work we do on TSC will also have a direct impact on cancer research, and we will be testing the drugs we find as weapons against cancer. In addition, the work we do to create a system to attack orphan diseases will form a prototype for work on other orphan diseases.
TSC is a genetic disorder that leads to benign tumors in multiple organs, including the brain, kidneys, heart, eyes, lungs and other organs. During the first few years, the severity of TSC can range from mild skin abnormalities to, in severe cases, seizures, mental retardation or renal failure. For more information about TSC please visit www.tsalliance.org

Distributed Folding
The Distributed Folding project seeks to understand how proteins fold and assemble into living cells. Understanding protein folding will help make better treatments for diseases.
Proteins have a vast number of folds, larger than we could hope to compute even with distributed computing. Usually only one fold is found in nature. The Distributed Folding Project aims to test a new protein folding algorithm to see if it can reproduce natural protein folds after making extremely large samples of many different folds.
This is a project where every CPU really does make a difference. Even older computers (e.g. Pentium II), can make significant contributions, over 15,000 structures a day!
This is still a relatively small distributed computing project, every CPU make a noticeable difference. The client is available on most OS's and can be installed as a service on Windows NT/2000/XP. The client has just been improved to run twice as fast AND produce better results at the same time. All machines benefit from the new client, but if your machine has 256MB RAM or more, the client can be configured to run twice as fast! The group behind the project does an excellent job on support and always listens to new ideas.

Distributed Particle Accelerator Design (DPAD)
The Project's Scientific Aims are:
The experiment is called the Neutrino Factory, scheduled for construction some time around 2015. Its primary aim is to fire beams of neutrinos (fundamental particles) through the Earth's interior to detector stations on different continents. They're doing this to measure whether they change type en route (there are 3 types of neutrino) and data from this in turn will allow them to determine the neutrino's mass (and whether it even has mass).
Also the proton beam that is produced at the start (this hits the target rod at the beginning of the simulation you download) is also going to be used in experiments for neutralising radioactive waste by transmuting the radioactive elements into stable ones. The program is currently in the simulation phase of the front end design.

ECC2-109
This is a distributed computing project to solve the Certicom ECC2-109 challenge.
In general it can be described as a whole lot of computers from all over the world, all of them working together in n attempt to have a collision. Each of the computers runs a program that computes DP (Distinguished Points) values. Each time a computer finds a DP, it is uploaded to a main server. The main server then checks to see if anyone has uploaded a matching DP (this is known as a collision). If a collision happens (two matching DP values exist), then the Certicom challenge is solved!
The Certicom ECC2-109 challenge has a prize of $10,000 for successful completion of the challenge. If the eCompute ECC2-109 project is successful in completing this challenge, we plan to distribute the prize in the following proportions.
- 50% split evenly for the two submitters of the matching DP values
- 50% split among the eCompute ECC2-109 project developers

Folding@Home
Description: The Folding@Home project seeks to understand the process behind protein folding. In order to carry out their function (e.g. as enzymes or antibodies) the protein must take on a particular shape. It makes this shape by folding.
Understanding how proteins self-assemble ("protein folding") is a holy grail of modern molecular biophysics. What makes it such a great challenge is its complexity, which renders simulations of folding extremely computationally demanding, and difficult to understand. The Stanford group has developed a new way to simulate protein folding. A protein can fold itself in one-millionth of a second. It takes 1000 computers to simulate a fold in the same amount of time. Stanford needs your help, and so does Team Anandtech.
Requirements: The Folding@Home client needs a significant portion of RAM to run properly, so it is best run on machines with at least 160MB of RAM; with that much there will be enough for the operating system, programs, and Folding@Home client to coexist peacefully. It is best to use a 300MHz or faster processor to ensure that work units will be returned within the set time limit (which is longer for larger, more complex units, and shorter for the simpler ones).
An always-on connection is preferred (it does not have to be fast). Folding@Home can also work with a demand dial connection, with occasional monitoring to ensure that it doesn't get "stuck" waiting for a work unit. The client has no caching capability, and can not work on non-networked systems.

UD
United Devices and Intel have launched a landmark research project that allows people to make a real difference in the fight against cancer.
Team AnandTech and the Intel-United Devices Cancer Research Project are asking you to volunteer your PC to help process molecular research being conducted by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford in England and the National Foundation for Cancer Research. To participate, you simply download a very small, no cost, non-invasive software program that works like a screensaver: it runs when your computer isn't being used, and processes research until you need your machine. Your computer never leaves your desk, and the project never interrupts your usual PC use.
The UD client rewards you based on the amount of time you spend analyzing data, rather than the amount of data you return. This makes UD ideal to run along side other Distributed Computing projects. You won't analyze as much data, but you'll still be helping Team AnandTech work its way to number one!

SETI - Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
Are we alone? Help analyze radio signals from space in mankind's ultimate quest.
This project is the largest Distributed Computing Project in the world. Our Seti Team is currently ranked #6 in the world! We invite you to join us as we make one final big push to go out in a bigger blaze of glory than the recent Leonid Meteor Shower. Our goal is to climb at even higher in the rankings while we battle to hold off other SETI teams that are trying to overtake us. The first phase of SETI will end very soon and we have BBR threatening to pass us. We have had a lot of good competition with them but it will be even more fun if we can hold them off, "back in our dust".
Support the SETI TeAm and you can share in the fame and pride in ending the project among the very best. And because each SETI WU has a unique identifier, you could become famous all over the world for being "the one" to make "First Contact" and find "ET."
For information go to our Seti Team Website: Team AnandTech Seti
We have lots of stats: Team AnandTech SETI Stats

It may also be worth noting that SETI has recently obtained a 100Mbps connection and is now running very smooth. The team also has a nice list of Queues that you can use to obtain workunits and to monitor individual stats. Poof maintaines an excellent thread...

The SETI Team is building a Team Beowulf Cluster. Once done, it will (hopefully) consist of 24 nodes using Abit BP6 boards, dual Celeron 366's @ 550....all connected together to form a fast and VERY COOL parallel computer platform. Check it out in the DC forum
