Intellectually, I've always known that anyone can be a sex offender and that they don't look any different from the rest of us. But I guess a part of me always thought I could tell... until today.

Good lord, these people look like your next door neighbor or your teacher or your pastor. They've had police officers go through the program in the past, they've even had an FBI agent. Even just talking to them, you would never think they were capable of their crimes. And you don't even want to know about their crimes.

Whenever I spoke with people on the staff, they told me how much more worried they are over their kids because they know that it could be anyone that can commit these crimes. Some people only let family members watch their kids, and even then, they're worried because you can never know for sure until it's too late.

Eye opening stuff today.

voluntary castration

I might be meeting this guy in a few weeks.

They're talking about opening up a sexual offenders unit in my area.

Are we talking child pornographers and rapists, or 21 year old guys being slapped on the wrist with counselling for having sex with thier 17 year old girlfriends, or both?

This is the whole reason why i have this philosphy. Everyone i talk to think it's stupid, what do you think?

When i have kids, I'm going to teach them to question every adult and to only give respect when it is first given to them. That 'respect you elders' crap is great in a perfect society, but not ours. Sickos are experts in manipulation, it's so sad. Even if a uniformed person comes up to them and asks them to go with them or whatever... run to someone you know.

I think this is perfectly ok.. i want to keep my children safe. Am i too paranoid ?

It's in one of the local prisons. They actually talk about it some in the current issue of Texas Monthly.

They put sex offenders that are due to be released anyway through the program. It's made some difference on recidivism. Enough that it keeps getting money. And it's better than just putting these guys back out on the street.

It's sex offenders in general, but they try to put similar offenders in groups together. I sat in on one group that had some pedophiles. Some commited assaults on family members, others on strangers.

edit: BTW, this isn't slap on the wrist type stuff. Some of these guys are seriously violent. They have to be good prisoners to get into the program, but the things that they are capable of boggle the mind.

Usually the 21 year olds who did it with the 17 year olds don't go to those kinds of programs unless they really PO'd the judge. I obviously can't speak for Spoooon's experience, but that's what I've found out from friends.

By the way, if you do it with two 15 year olds you do go to those programs. Just not for long.

That's exactly the attitude that some of the staff have. Once something like that happens to a kid, nothing will ever be the same again. Far better to be somewhat overprotective than to allow your child to experience one of the great evils in the world.
