The TAU and another unnamed race - totalling SEVEN playable races. :Q

Is that the most in any RTS?

How is this game? I haven't really found that good of a RTS since AOE2 and the C&C games (NOT Generals). Never got into Starcraft either.

I like the game as it is basically a ground game. Starcraft you could create an assault fleet of carriers or wraiths\battlecruisers and just wreak havoc.

Probably going to be Tyranids for the other race. Too bad they didn't break up the types of each force. It would be nice to try a Space Marine force that has a heavier focus on melee, or various Imperial Guard styles, (Death Krops or Steel Legion would be fun). Even better, add in a Inquisitorial race, get a chance to use the Inquisition and the Grey Knights. That would be a riot.

Assault sqauds are the Marine's melee specialists. Just upgrade them & the squad captain with power weapons, & they can be deadly. I'm surprised the Necrons aren't the new race, and I would think they will be the unannounced race. The Tau is basically the Imperial Guard with some cooler armor & stuff.

i played the demo of dawn of war this weekend. was pretty cool but had a few points i didn't like.
1) you have to take over certain points on the map and hold them.
2) not much room to build your base. i like building huge sprawling bases and you just can't do it in this game.
3) vehicles seem way overpowered
4) not many different units to build. this may be due to the demo version, but i didn't see any indication that there were a lot more.

otherwise, it was a fun game to play. nice graphics and sound.

Haha, the idea of an Ork tech tree is hilarious.

Looking forward to it, but that's because I enjoyed DoW so immensely. However, I was really disappointed in theWinter Assault single-player campaign, that just seemed a mess. And apparently there were some pretty brutal early-game imbalances introduced with the Imperial Guard. Will get this for sure, but might not rush out for it. If you haven't played DoW though, great (or very good at the least) game IMO.

I have to agree with CitizenKain to be honest.

Id much rather have proper Space Marine Chapters, IG Regiments, Ork clans and the like to a bit more specialisation. Blood Ravens being slightly more Librarian-focused or rathing than forcing the Generic Chaos force into worshipping Khorne, add variety and choice in line with a decent fluff backing. Im not particularly asking for the world, just 1-2 units, specially tilted stats (minor) and decent skins. Any minor discrepency will annoy the hell out of hardcore fans but I even enjoy C. S. Goto's books and he's supposed to be one of the worst for using decent WH40k fluff. Dawn of War was approachable by anyone, not just WH40k fans.... Id want that to continue. WH40k is a diverse universe which could support great games,

A few good unit quotes would be fun too. An appearance by some of the lesser known/used parties or ones that cant really fit an entire race in would be cool. A small part of the Inquisition dropping in for a visit in the story or having some Dark Eldar attempt to manipulate the story with their own agendas.... small touches like that would be appreciated by me personally.

Tau dont thrill me, Tyranids sound just like the generic alien Zerg race and Necrons... despite being powerful and evil look rather plain to my uneducated WH40k eyes.

Back to my reading, Dan Abnett - Necropolis. The Gaunts Shosts series based around an IG Squad.... Im quite attached to Mad Larkin, the Sniper at the moment.

The Tyranids are without doubt the most alien race encountered by Humanity. They have been likened to a galactic swarm of locusts, remorselessly hungry and too numerous to stop. Under the direction of the Hive Mind, Tyranid Hive Fleets have bored into our space. These Fleets have discovered sustenance in abundance in the forms of the Imperium of Man and the other species of the Milky Way galaxy. Tyranids continue their endless advance, seeking planets to strip of bio-mass before moving on, leaving nothing but a ball of scoured rock in the wake of their titanic swarms. What's worse, no one seems able to halt, let alone reverse, the Tyranid tide."

Is that the same as Blizzard's Zerg?

I want the 'nids just to see genestealers rip space marines to shreds and the almighty carnifex stomping and slicing through lesser lifeforms.

lots of ballancing tweaks have been altered, so the vehicles aren't over powered.
The game is focusing on batlle, not building large bases so that's quite intentional.

I'm glad to hear the Tau are making it into the next expansion. I recently played the beta of the 1.5 Tau mod, and while incomplete, I think they will be fun to play. I would imagine the other unnamed race would be the Necons because some of their units are already included in WA. I wouldn't mind seeing the Tyranids though. One thing I think they could really improve on would be making actual chapters and craftworlds, etc. vary according to the table top chapters. The Blood Angels Death Company would be pretty cool. ;)

The original and expansion are definitely worth picking up. They are the most fun in an RTS I've had since Warcraft III and the Frozen Throne expansion.

You don't have to task workers on gathering resources, which is a plus for those who despise micromanaging. You simply build power generators for the power resource, and capture strategic points/relics/critical points for requisition (basically money).

Campaigns are a lot of fun, if not over the top, and the multiplayer can be a lot of fun as well.

1) You don't actually *have* to hold them, they just give you resources if you do. They are kind of like mines. On a lot of single player maps there's really no point in capturing them all.
2) This varies a lot by map.
3) IIRC the demo doesn't give the enemy any vehicle counter units, something which actually holds for most of the single player campaign. It's sort of a rude shock when they do show up 8)
4) I don't remember demo numbers, but there's a fair number each side, and some are sort of compound units - a standard marine squad is very different to a heavy bolter squad to a rocket launcher squad with sergeant etc.

IMO the thing DoW did best was pyrotechnics - some battles end up with a truly staggering amount of firepower happening on screen.

Not even close.

that only has 3 listed races:confused:

I can't follow the link at work, but there's 16 races in wbc3 - are you sure you aren't looking at some info that says 3 new ones over wbc2 ?

Alien, non-humanoid, animal-like in their instincts, aggressive. Could remind me of a swarm of wasps.

So yes, to me they do sound like the Zerg. There are major differences in background and how Tyranids take over planets but Im not getting the feeling that they will add something really interesting to the game for me. Its gonna feel a little like deja vu.
