... and it will have Tages DRM with a 3-machine activation limit.

Anybody else highly disappointed with this? Anno 1404 originally shipped with Tages but they patched it out in the DVD version. However, the digital version still retains Tages which completely kills the usefulness of owning it on steam for me.

The DRM implemention here changed this expansion from a day 0 must-buy to something I'll look at a year from now to see whether it still has Tages or not.

I entered the thread not really caring because 1) after tracking down the gold version of a previous release I found it a bit disappointed on how narrow the gameplay was and 2) the limited copy protection crap it came with. I see that was removed in the original, but if the expansion comes with it, still don't care.

How come there's not a unified copy protection amongst publishers?
Different DRM providers competing for different publishers. The Tages team gave them a cheaper deal than the Starforce team did (maybe), or showed them better looking powerpoints (probably), or took them out to a nicer dinner afterwards (definitely).

Ultimately though, having just one DRM provider would it make easier for the pirates since it would be a single scheme to break. This is why the schemes that require an online account and internet connectivity are probably going to be the winners in the end, since they can be far more difficult to defeat. I wouldn't be shocked if in five years even single player games were hosted on internet servers to defeat piracy (but ostensibly, to provide some few advantages regarding co-op and multiplayer modes).

In my opinion, the Anno series is kind of the opposite of the Total War series. It's a far superior economic sim/city builder but incomparably worse when it comes to the military aspects and combat. Ship battles aren't so bad (since they are the focus) but land battles are something to avoid entirely. Luckily, you can play most modes without resorting to land battles.

The draw here as a co-op experience is on the economic sim/city builder side. Developing settlements on a couple of islands to be mutually dependent on trade routes with a friend or two sounds great to me.

I liked the visuals, the building aspect was great. That there were so few islands and you intentionally couldn't grow/harvest everything on one island blew.
