NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bury him or freeze him, magician David Blaine vows to survive.

The New York illusionist who buried himself alive for a week in an underground plastic coffin last year announced Monday he planned to encase himself in a block of ice for more than two days near Times Square. Starting next Monday, the 27-year-old said he would be encased in a 6 ton block of ice for 58 hours on Broadway at West 44th Street with a tube running in providing air and water.

Blaine said in a statement that with the help of thousands of people who visited his grave in April last year, he was able to survive. ``Now, I ask well-wishers to lend me their warmth and support by visiting and touching the block of ice in which I will be frozen.'' Blaine, whose feats are inspired by those of legendary magician and escape artist Harry Houdini 100 years ago, spent seven days buried and visible through the clear coffin, sustained only by water.

Publicists for the ``Frozen in Time'' event said two halves of the block of ice with Blaine's body contour cut into it will close around him and be welded together. They said Blaine would be wearing only a pair of pants and boots to protect himself. Described as Blaine's most dangerous stunt, his vital signs will be monitored by doctors and he has worked out eye signals to use in case of an emergency.

``The biggest dangers are loss of circulation and frostbite in his fingers and toes, and the threat of falling asleep in which case his head could slump, bringing his face into contact with the ice, damaging his skin,'' Blaine's medical consultant, Dr Ronald Rudin, said. ``There is also the danger of blood clots which could break loose and move to the brain or other vital organs as David is being broken out of the ice.''

Blaine hopes to end the stunt on the night of Nov. 29 during a live ABC-TV special, ``David Blaine: Frozen in Time.'' His feat can also be seen on the Web site http://www.davidblaine.com.

This does sound cool...

He is a good entertainer but I saw a show on his street-magic and much of it is rigged by cameras by the time we see it... :(

Josh, why the hell do you say "this man is a JOKE". He is a great entertainer, and I doubt you could do anything close to his magic tricks/stunts.
Go play pokemon.

Well, he's certainly impressive... but i'll like to see him in front of an audience like David Copperfield. All that street stuff is interesting, but you could definitely see that a lot of it was camera tricks. And like josh said, that levitation stuff was just BS. They built that up through the entire show until the last 2 minutes, then they showed it. It was so lame that you could tell that they were using wires. Who'd they think they were going to fool?

But this upcoming one isn't magic (the ice one). We can watch funkier stuff on shows such as Guiness World Records or Ripley's Believe It or Not.

I was pretty impressed by that floating street stuff. Anybody have an explanation about how it was done? Those were REAL people I assume.....

I was just in Times Square and passed by Blane. It looks pretty lame. It's just a big fake looking block of ice. He did look cold but I don't know if it was acting on his part or whatever. I snapped some photos, will post a link of pics when I get them developed. The cool thing was that Henry Winkler, The Fonz, was there for some odd reason so I snapped a pic of him too. :)

Well, I think the outer layer of ice was real. I think he may have some type of insulation or heating being pumped into the inner chamber. It's not like he is frozen in a block of ice or anything.

Its a glacier from alaska. And if he touches the sides for more than a split second his skin will adheave to the surface and have to be cut off for it to get away from the ice. And no, he will not SLEEP, he will stay awake for 2 days.

Yeah, at first I thought he was literally encased in ice.

What it really is is BS. It looks so fake its not even funny.

Besides, since when it staying in place for long periods of time an amazing feat? Its not like he has no air or food, he is just staying in a small place for a long period of time. Anyone can do that.

(edit: this is from what I saw when TRL went there. It looked so incredibly fake)

The word on the streets is that his air supply (he has tubes for water and air) is pumping warm air into the block. I believe he does not have any access to food.

He was talking about this, as well as his previous feat of being buried for a week, on the Howard Stern Show. He claimed that in anticipation of the first stunt, he had practiced by lying in a closed coffin in his living room for four days without food. I am not sure what to believe, but in any event he is a pretty good salesman.
