I just bought some of this from my store last night. I was watching the Food Network at my hotel this past weekend and I saw a whole show on hot sauces and how this is the hottest sauce ever made. They actually showed 'Dave' too and he bit into a damn habanero pepper! This guy is crazy!

Anyways, I tried the smallest little drop of this sauce and let me tell you, it's realllly hot! Has anybody else tried this and found something to be hotter? It sure adds quite the kick to salsas. The bottle also touts that it can peel wax off floors and can remove driveway grease stains. :) It also claims that it should not be used by anyone with heart/respiratory problems. Now that's my kind of hot sauce! :D

Yeah, that stuff is absurdly hot. I'm sure there are sauces out there that are technically hotter, but Dave's actually tastes good. I'll add it to a pot of chili/jambalaya/etc for extra heat and flavor.

<---- lunching on jamba I made last night. :D

Where can you buy that stuff? This is the second time that sauce has been mentioned in the forums and none of the store in my area carry it.

Dave's is a nice addition to Gumbo (although I usually just add jabaneros to the roux at the last stage)

Huh? Making the roux is generally the first thing you do.

This thread at RedFlagDeals has mucho info ....

At some point a "sauce" becomes an "extract".

Dave's is very, very, very hot. Dangerous to those not familiar with the heat game. However, from a pure "hot" level it pales greatly in comparison to some of the extracts out there.

Currently the hottest extract in the world is The Source at 7.1 million Scoville units!!!!!!!!

Considering that Dave's Original is only somewhere around 80-90,000 Scoville units ... 7.1 Million is alot. One teeny drop at a time to a multi-gallon chili and it will feel like molten lava in your mouth. Kids will die from a drop probably so it's not the most responsible thing to have in your house unless it's under lock and key.

Yep, Dave's is very hot but tastes very good.

My friend had a bottle of Dave's Special Reserve (approx 2-3x hotter than normal Dave's), and the bottle said it should last a lifetime.

In 3 months we finished 40% of the bottle.

I got some takeout from a local taqueria one day and DOUSED my already spicy taco with the sauce. I mean, probably a good half-teaspoon or something (FYI: recommended dosage is 1 toothpick's worth for an entire plate of food).

It was hot enough to make breathing difficult but not unbearable. My friends just stared at me like I was some kind of psychopath.

The "like" in that sentence implies some amount of uncertainty as to your psychopath status. I can say with authority that anyone putting that much Dave's on a single taco is completely off their rocker. ;)

Being in the heart of chicken wings territory.... (We don't call them Buffalo wings.... the rest of the country calls them buffalo wings... we just call them wings - - - Western NY)....
Currently, Dave's is supposed to be either the 2nd or 3rd hottest.... I wish I could remember the names of the brands that are supposed to be hotter. There are several shops in this area that specialize in hot sauces.

But, not a lot of people are aware, or even realize, just how hot hot can get. So, at the pizza shop, we usually keep a bottle of Dave's around.... the guys who work there even chip in for it, since it isn't actually on our menu, and we don't want to completely pi$$ the owner off. We get these idiots who walk in and say "Gimme an order of the hottest wings you can make. Your hot is my mild. You can't make them too hot for me." Heh heh heh, wanna bet buddy!!

Also, eating really hot things like dave's causes the release of endorphins (natural pain killers) into the body. Eating it regularly causes a Pavlov's dog type of reaction, where your body will start releasing the endorphins before you even feel the heat... Hence, you can build up a tolerance to the stuff (and a mild addiction to the stuff). It's great to build up a tolerance.... tell someone to try some... pour some on your finger, lick it off, without a tear in your eye.... then watch the poor sucker as his mouth heats up like a supernova. Oh, and if you *do* this... and start laughing so hard that you get tears in your eyes..... DON'T wipe your eyes with your fingers!!!!!

edit: From what I've read (before dousing customer's wings with insanity sauce), hot sauce causes no damage to the body, only pain. Thus, it's not going to kill a kid.

Yeah, I got a bottle laying around. I bought it when a friend introduced it to me. Thought it'll be cool and it was, but gets old fast. Now the bottle is still sitting in the fridge. Don't ever touch it. Don't even know if its expired yet. Maybe I'll throw it out one of these days.

It's actually great when you're making a batch of something like chili as it adds a nice flavor. It's just too concentrated to go on individual portions for most people. My bottle has lasted me the better part of two years (and I cook quite a bit).

I seriously doubt the stuff would ever go bad, maybe if you left it out in the sun for a week something would start to grow...

If that happened, you should call your local university and say you've got some new "space" bacteria. ;)

Bah, you're all weak.

Two years ago my dad told me he would give me $30 to drink a shot of Dave's Ultimate Insanity Sauce(the hottest one, rated at Insanity++). Being the madman that I am, I told him I would do a double shot for $60. My dad even got it on video because we were on vacation at the time.

Well, it's been two years since then and I still can't hardly taste or smell anything. At least not like I used to be able to. And nothing is considered hot or spicy to me. I can eat jalapeno peppers like candy now.

Stay away from hot sauce that comes with a warning label that says things like: Use only 1 drop at a time diluted in oil, Do not ingest if you're pregnant or have heart problems, Keep out of eyes, etc.

I agree to the "mild addiction" statement above. I used to pick up this hot sauce in a Hispanic section of Atlanta that was basically habanero and some vinegar thrown in for good measure. At first the damn sauce would literally take your breath away and then the exquisite pain would ensue. After using it on practically everything from spaghetti to just eating it on a Ritz cracker, I became immune to its hellacious heat and I could sip it straight from the bottle. This stuff would actually make your eyes water when you opened the bottle up and got a wee bit too close to it. But it gave me intestinal distress like no other food I had ever eaten.Imagine, sucking down habanero pepper sauce from the bottle can give you the shits! Whodathunkit? :>)

Peace

What about PureCap? I thought that was the hottest, although it's not really exactly a food product.

Pure Cap isn't even close, under a million Scoville units. It doesn't really matter though, these "sauces" are merely a quest for who can produce the hottest sauce, they have no useful purpose in the real world. When you go beyond a certain point you cross the line from sauce to additive. Does it make a bit of difference if you use one where a single drop can season 100 gallons of chili or one where a single drop only flavors 50 gallons of chili? Of course not, nobody on earth can eat this stuff unless it's diluted to 1 part per million. So what's the point? Dave's Ultimate Insanity Sauce is great (I love hot food), but that stretches the limit of what can be eaten safely. Beyond that one sauce is just like any other, completely inedible unless it's watered down to the point where it's indistinguishable from all the other ones.
