Daunting figures for RC5-72! Simple math fun!

People have been posting in this thread about the various projects and so he adds something that shows success in a particular project and makes no mention of RC5-72 and you can read an "obvious" intent from that???

If you want to have people consider RC5-72 as a viable project for them then I would suggest you stick to the merits of it and leave the assumptions of intent out of the discussion. I believe someone earlier asked you to point out where on the distributed site they could see the benefits that you spoke of earlier. Maybe you should considering posting a quote from the page.

Again, I am not bashing you or RC5-72, I crunch many projects and I personally think that all projects have value and each individual should be allowed to judge them on their merits and make their decision based on whatever criterion they want.

Well said dude. This thread although it's title contains "RC5-72" was definately accepted as a discussion of the various projects, their progress, goals, and merits.

And yes I completely agree with Crazee it would be very helpful to this discussion if pink0 could find those d.net pages discussing the value of the RC5-72 project (or any future encryption challenge) outside the proof of the encryption's security/usefulness (or lack thereof).

well, it seems that dnet themself think it will take less time than RC5-64 as in 1997 they considered RC5-64 to take 20 years, and now RC5-72 to take "only" 10-12 years. But thats with 0 grow rate over the current keyrate. So it will be less than 10-12 years. But you must consider even with moore's law it will take more than 18 months to double the keyrate. Not everyone is always buying the latest computer, some are still running dnet on their old P1.

But you must consider that dnet will probably shrink. For quite a while I've been crunching on RC5-64, but after it ended I shortly run OGR and now switched to Folding@home after I heard about the future plans with RC5-72. Like many others it seems RC5-64 is pretty secure (yes, it has been cracked, and considering the current speed of dnet it doesn't take that long (IIRC less than a year). BUT: Not quite everyone has the computing power dnet has. Now if you use RC5-72 for example your files will be safe for a few years. It will take a while 'til normal systems will be able to crack RC5-64 in acceptable time. Thats the main point I saw in dnet, proving the insecurity/security of these several ecryption things and proving the distributed computing stuff works. Well, it seems to be proven and therefore _I_ decided to move to F@H. And I'm pretty sure a few have done or will do the same (or move to other projects).
About Seti... well, although I'm in Sci-Fi I think Seti has a lot of computing power already and other projects deserve some too. And then _personally_ I think that Seti is a "problem" which can wait a little longer, come on, to me it doesn't really matter if we find ETs next year or maybe in 10 years. Would be interesting but I can live without that knowledge while with the medical projects we can safe lifes.

Pink0,

I think you are getting a little too sensitive. I didn't see anywhere where NicColt's post implied any project was less significant, all I thought he was doing was posting a success story for folding.

I am not attacking you or RC5-72, I am just trying to keep this thread from becoming a flame fest like so many others become when the relative merits of projects are discussed.

I 2nd that ,Pink0 ,you are being oversensitive now.

I can't wait! 😛😉 ,& I reckon starting now is worthwhile because the more you delay its start the longer you wait for any results.
Also lives can still be saved ,no one said only 1 project should be run! ,like I said earlier ,there's enough people & PC's to go around all projects.
Its only logical that SETI will have a bigger user base as it has been running longer than other DC projects (aside from RC5 & P95),also some people will have switched to other projects already.e.g. Matrox users have largely switched to F@H/G@H from SETI

yeah, its just that I feel its more important to get e.g. FAH results than Seti results as fast as possible. And then CPUs are getting faster... so the work of the next 10 years may be 2 years in 10 years (uh... whatever 😕 ). But as you said, there are enough users for every project (ok, not really 😉 But I hope with the recent media hype for folding@home we'll get quite a few new users to crunch for FAH etc. And with the BOINC stuff the power could be distributed more equally (?).

Once ECCp finishes I will be switching over to folding. I would put a few computers on folding right now but ECCp will finish up soon so I want to have as much power as I can on it. 😛
