Daughter killed laptop! Help!!!!

I bought my daugther an entry level Toshiba laptop for school last year. Last night, she
called me crying...she had spilled an entire cup of tea on the laptop. I told her to turn it off and remove the battery...then dry it and turn it upside down on a towel overnight to see if she could dry it off. She tried turning it on this morning to no avail...it makes sounds but does not boot up. Is repair feasible here? The laptop only cost 399 on sale...however she does have files on it that are important and not backed up...if it can't be economically repaired...can I remove the hard drive to get the files out with an external? We live in South Jersey near philly and my daughter lives in DC...so if anyone is out there that can help...please let me know

Cherry Hill native? Seems like they send all their kids to schools down here in MD and DC.

If you're going to repair it yourself, and she only shorted the mobo, it might be economically feasible. If you're not going to repair it yourself, no, it's almost certainly not. Go to Fat Wallet and try to find a good laptop deal, I suppose. Or get her something from the "for sale" forum here.

The best thing you can do is to have her unscrew the bottom of the laptop to get at the hard drive, pull it out carefully, and then stash it in a safe place. Newegg sells about a million different 2.5" to USB external enclosures, so grab one of those (make sure to get the appropriate one, depending on whether the drive is IDE or SATA), and then mount the drive up in it. If you're lucky, it'll work properly.

2nd

Also, did you buy any type of warranty? If not, open up the laptop and post pics of any damage.

For $399 it is better to have it safely recycled (look up electronics recycling) and get a new one. 2nd on the HDD enclosure - the HDD is likely OK, as long as it's circuit board wasn't fried.
