Daughter going off to College, looking for best deal on a laptop

Hey guys, I kind of need some assistance.

My daughter is going off to college in a few months and I want to buy her a laptop.
With so many coupons and specials going on right now i'm overwhelmed with options.
Since I went to college at night (got degree while in Army) I'm not familiar with what a kid needs on a campus today.
On a scale of 1-10 of computer literacy (10 being best), she is about a 7.

Criteria:

Needs to be a Dell (warranty needed since I'll be 2000 miles away)
Software is unimportant since I'm going to reload it anyway.
Does she need wireless for college campus?
I want the best i can get for $1500 or less. (preferably less...lol)

Can you guys help me out? I know there are a million threads with coupons and stuff but I need some opinions as well.

I would wait for one of thoes dell hot deals to pop up again. The last one was what, $750 off $1500 or something ridiculous.

She'd be better off with a desktop. Laptops on college campuses aren't all that useful, for note-taking and stuff, it's easier to just write them down - especially stuff like math and chemistry. They're easily stolen and fragile. Not all campuses have wireless internet access (but most big schools do).

If she's going to live on campus especially, there's no real need for one. I never thought I needed a laptop living on campus, even when I moved off campus, the laptop was only used for those instances when we were working on a group project at our house and wanted two computers going (since we had a computer in the room where we did our homework).

If you're dead set on a laptop, I'll second whoever said wait for the next big deal from Dell.

yeah dells have awesome deals, but ive spent more time fixing my friends dell inspron its funny.

its came complete with mega bloat ware, and the little tray area was full of alsorts of crap like AOL etc

hs screen backlight bleeds immensly, the resolution is poor, the laptop doesnt even feel well built and his sounds completly stopped working and dell have so far not helped him

this is route i chose....i built a nice rig for myself...and yeah while its here and set up its great. laptops are useless for note taking, and if u get a laptop it'll stay in your room 99% of the time. but.....

i wish i did have a laptop. theyre quieter, take up less space (im starting to get very cluttered in my room) and best of all....when your packing up to go home, you just shut the lid and put it in the car

i hate setting up and dismantling my desktop every time new/end of term comes round

Yes, definitely get wireless, almost all college campuses are wireless now.

I'd probably go with a 700m or a 600m and get her a 17-19" LCD and wireless mouse/KB to use in the dorm. Unfortunately, the 700m doesn't have a port replicator (stupid!) so it's a little bit of a hassle to disconnect everything when she wants to take the laptop with her. The 600m does have a port replicator.

Those are advantages of a laptop, true, but with LCD monitors as cheap as they are, I'd just go that route. My mom bought a very nice Dimension 4700 with a 19" LCD for ~$450 after rebate from dell, it's damn-near silent.

There's nothing wrong with a laptop - I'd just worry about theft. Dorms aren't always very safe, and even if the door locks and is secure, there's always the chance of a bad roomate who'll leave it unlocked. I don't know how many times I came back to my dorm the first year I lived there to find the door propped wide open and the roomate nowhere to be found.

I'm impressed at how much they've improved from their first models but kept the prices in the budget range. The early models had terrible, terrible screens, but the new ones are quite nice. I'd be concerned about the warranty though.
