I've fooled around with these and other suggestions and was underwhelmed...
Then, quite by accident, I hovered over the top of the task bar and got the vertical arrow cursor...
I found that if I clicked and dragged that up so that the task bar was at least three lines wide, the date I was looking for magically appeared...
At that point, you can simply drag it back to the original width (one line in my case) in one continuous motion and release the mouse button.
Everything's back to where it was except now you know the date (until you forget it again!
