Weird. have a backup external firewire drive. I DID USE the EJECT function to safely remove the drive my desktop PC XP and plugged it into my laptop. First time I have done this. Now my XP on laptop and my Desktop l FwDrive shows as all data gone and drive needs to be formatted. This drive is a 2nd fireware drive I have on my primary PC.
All I did was connect it to my laptop? What is up? The drive shows up in drive management as need to be formatted and as a primary partition.
I think I might have set it up as a secondary partition. don't remember exactly. Reboots do not fix this issue. I would like to get the drive back as before. Total PIA to re-copy data back to it if I don't have to. I use it as online storage for MP3's that I have on DVD's.

update: checking event viewer appears there is a bad block on the hd. Wonder if this bad block could be causing the issue with this drive? What can I run on drive to determine what the problem is? I know that a chkdsk run in "deep" mode can take days.
======
Have not run any utilities on the drive yet.
Suggestions?
Update2: Simple chdsk disk gave 384 bad sectors and all data is back, minus area with bad blocks. Can't believe this 200gig maxtor is going bad after only 2 years.
time for a format. I know that regular chkdsk /f doesn't fix if all bad sectors. A chkdsk /r will do that. Since data is secondary, format followed by a chkdsk /r will be my solution
