Hello all. I am posing this question here as I have been unable to find a satisfactory solution through my usual googling.
I am probably looking for a database program or system that integrates pictures into the records and possibly record selection system, but I am not sure where to start as I have never really used a database program.
System I currently use:
I keep a very simple ?database? on my windows mobile phone. I put ?database? in quotes because it really isn?t one, but rather a collection of organized Microsoft Word files. I play a lot of poker live. I keep notes on regular players. I have a Word file for each of these players based on a template containing simple fields: Name, Physical Description, General Observations, Preflop play, Postflop Play, Preflop Range, etc. Now, I know these aren?t actual ?fields? in the database sense as they are really just headings contained within a Word file, but the purpose of this post is to step this system up where all information would be included as fields in a real database.
These individual files are stored in folders that make sense organizationally. The file name is usually Player Name, followed by a physical description or name of someone who the player resembles, for example: ?John Doe ? George Costanza in Aviator Glasses.doc.?
A lot of players names are unknown to me. People are often not very friendly at the table and frequently no names are given. In this case, a description has to suffice.
Goal:
I would like to have a database where records are kept on each player and integrated into one system where people are cross-referenced based on field information.
For Example, when looking for a record, I could narrow it to records that are white, Male, 30 ? 50 years old, balding, and Overweight. This would quickly whittle down hundreds of listings into dozens and make record selection easier.
That is probably standard DB stuff. My big requirement is to have the program integrate pictures into the records. So, once I select the record for John Doe, I can see a picture. More importantly, I would like to be able to see the pictures as thumbnails alongside the record name and physical description during the record selection process. In the previous example, I select white, Male, 30 ? 50 years old, balding, and Overweight, the records are narrowed down to several dozen and each of those relevant records is displayed as thumbnails of the people along with the record name.
This would solve the problem of having to remember people?s names (which I am terrible at), as well as easily selecting people whose names I do not know.
Your Suggestions?
So, that is what I want to accomplish. What program would you recommend? I am fairly computer savvy. I don?t really program but am an Excel expert, having created spreadsheets using incredibly complex formulas. I am willing to learn a new program as long as it is the right one.
Would Access work for this?
It would be a plus to be able to view this database on a Windows Mobile device, but this isn?t a hardcore requirement as I will probably be purchasing something like an OQO Model 03 next year.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions and for your time.
