Database comparison - Informix v Sql Server

How robust/beefy is MS Sql Server compared to the big boys like Informix/Oracle/DB2? Is it a 'hundreds of terrabytes db' or 'millions(or tens of millions) of rows in the big tables' kind of solution a s/w architect would typically build upon? I'm more used to big boys I mentioned above with custom datablade data types that can cater to the large volume of real time data coming out of manufacturing process and the like.

I know, I'd just thought there would be more people familiar with the sort of questions I'm asking about here. And besides the mainstream databases all run on Unix platforms.
Those aren't mainstream. 😱

Mainstream are MySQL and PostgreSQL.
