Data recovery

So my friend bought a Sony computer last summer, and their HD crashed. They lost about $2k worth of photography work, that obviously she would like to recover. I know she should have backed it up, and it's her fault for not backing it up. My question though is how hard would it be to get Sony to pay for the recovery?

I have some programs to try myself that might recover some of it, but it's questionable if it will recover anything or not (because I don't know what exactly caused the drive to fail).

There is zero chance Sony will pay. Zero point zero. Nil.

I recommend Ontrack for data recovery.

If its not mechanically failed, its almost 100% recoverable. May take a few days to read each sector, but there are apps out there that can do it.

Sony wont cover shit.

Why would sony pay for data recovery? Replace the hard drive, sure. Not theirs or anyone elses fault she didn't back it up.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. I don't know why she didn't backup her photog work, as it's a second job for her.

Thanks, I will try that app. I have OnTrack data recovery CD, along with ERD Commander among some other apps. My guess is it's just a crashed drive and not mechanical, but without looking at it there is no way for me to know for sure.

If anybody has any other apps they know of besides those 3 please let me know. Thanks.

That's all Sony's going to say - you should have had it backed up.

PC manufacturers or vendors, as well as those of hard drives, are not held liable for data loss. They'll replace the hard drive, but that's it. If you want to get the data off of it, it's up to you.

If I bought a car and was driving crazy would the manufacturer replace it after I crashed? Essentially that is what you are asking.
