EDIT: problem solved, thanks guys

ok, first of all, i do data recovery all the time, its what occupies half my time at work. but for the life of me i cant think of any ideas on how to recover data off of 2 200gb drives in a broken array, and what i mean by broken, is that when the drives failed, they were taken out and raptors put in, and the raid controller was reprogrammed.

what i plan on doing, is using the same mobo, taking the raptors out, sticking the 200's in, and recreating the raid-0 array.... my concern is what will the controller do to the drives, i allready know it will create an unpartitioned physical drive (at least i hope it will), and leaves it unformatted. if it did that my job would be easy because i could start up Ontrack and do a RAW recovery, or even a format recovery

but here is my concern, what if i get the drives swapped? like drive 0 is now 1, if that happened then it would be impossible to pull information off because the stripes would be reversed and the files would be screwed up. unless when Ontrack detects that and fixes it accordingly. also, if i recreate the array and its the wrong way, would i be able to recreate without jeapordizing the data.

software being used: Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional
existing controller for drives: onboard VIA 2 port
using same exact mobo to recreate array
the data is critical to recover, but if its not possible with the tools i got then the customer is just going to have to start over.

any ideas? solutions? documents/instructions?

hopefully this piece of software works, now to wait for our next shipment of 500gb drives to dump to...

keep the ideas flowing incase this doesnt work, and thanks

ok, the software "appears" to work... phew...but i am unable to confirm because i dont have a 400gb+ drive to save the image to...

does anybody know any raid reconstructers that allow me to access the array rather than copy it to another location?

Drop the two drives in and the controller should recognize the array.

Do NOT create a new array - if there is data left, this will blow it away.

If the controller doesn't detect, swap them and try again.

If still no luck, talk to the controller's tech support.

Again, do NOT create a new array. Ontrack might not even save you from this.

wow im surprised that worked, also one thing i noticed is that if u plug them into a controller with no raid support it will detect in windows as drive 0 = 400gb and drive 1 as 200... drive 1 not initialized and drive 0 isnt accessable...

with data recovery software i can access the 400gb partition no problem but not with windows... so what that says to me is that windows recreates the parttition, but not to a point where it can be accessed (filesystem= RAW size 0bytes)

i ended up finding an old company copy of GetDataBack and RaidReconstructer and i was able to recover everything, well only about 40% due to the flawed naming scheme for unidentified folders in GetDataBack.

as one last test i threw it back on the raid controller and it worked, partly, but since i allready had my data i didnt feel like troubleshooting it

thanks guys, client is happy, and i am happy
