I had 2 partitions on my 200GB HDD. I used partition magic to combine them.

When it was finished, all I had left was 1 partition and the 2nd partition was just turned into unpartitioned space. All my data was gone.

I have since extended the partition to encompass that area too, but how can I get this data back?

I had a 250GB drive/partition disappear one day. Fvcking sucked. GetDataBack for NTFS however allowed me to recover everything, there was even entries for files that I had intentionally deleted many months previous. As long as you haven't overwritten the space with new data that was once occupied (well still is essentially) by your files, you *should* be able to recover with any decent recovery software. Unfortunately it is $79 to buy since the trial only allows you to see if you can get the files back. There is probably some closer to $50, but I do know GetDataBack is excellent.
