I just stumbled across an excellent and fairly technical article posted over at Viper Lair by Ice Czar which gives an in-depth look at many of the possible causes and preventions for data corruption. Lots and LOTS of info. I must admit that a lot of it was over my head but I found the portion on SATA to be most informative.
