Looks like they finally decided to roll out data caps to us over here in CT. Kind of surprised it took so long for them to do it, considering how much money they can make from overages. According to my email, it says my Essentials package (3Mbps down) gets me 50GB a month which isn't as bad as I thought it would be when I started reading it.

Excerpt from email:
Dear Cox High Speed Internet Customer,

We'd like to take this opportunity to announce the availability of the Data Usage Meter. This new feature provides an easy way to check monthly household high-speed Internet data usage at any time. Monthly data usage is the amount of data that users send, receive, download or upload each month for movies and videos, photos, web surfing, email, gaming, and other files.

Each of our packages has a specific data usage amount. The amount depends on your Cox High Speed Internet package and corresponds to the speeds provided with the package. Our speediest package provides the highest usage amount. You are currently subscribed to the Essentials Package which has a monthly data usage amount of 50 Gigabytes (GB). This is equivalent to streaming about 27 standard definition movies, or 16 high definition movies in a month*.

50GB/month sucks. Plain and simple. I hit that in a week if we use our devices regularly. Sorry you got capped.

Something seriously has to fucking give here. You have content providers like netflix, amazon, hbo, cbs, and whoever else has a service or app pushing streaming streaming streaming. But, you have ISP's using caps.

This model is not going to work for much longer. Either cable companies are going to force content providers to make changes (rediculous compression or stopping altogether) or the content providers have to push the ISPs to ditch the caps.

In the meantime, the customers are left standing there holding our dicks wondering what the fuck to do next.

I recently got an e-mail about caps here in the Midwest (Omaha, NE here). My cap is 250 GB/month AFAIK.

The pendulum will swing back to everyone cutting their online streaming time and just watching more cable/dish. Yey for progress :\

Customers will just be forced to upgrade their plans to unlimited / high data caps and pay the exorbitant fees the broadband providers charge for those plans.

Agreed. Everyone wants instant gratification in the form of streaming media, but the broadband companies are clamping down hard by using limits. We can't have both. Who will win?

Yeah when i complained to comcast that their 250GB cap WOULD effect me they said i could upgrade to their business plan at the same speed for only two times as much! :D

I told them to fuck off and verizon FIOS has had my money ever since, it is faster, the same price, and no cap.

I dont think Cox has a hard cap where they start charging you if you go over. They sent me an email just like that not too long ago except it was a 250gb cap. But they specifically stated they wont charge you for it. I think cox is against charging for going over the data cap. They will simply "recommend" you get a higher package, thats all.

I'd like to go to FIOS, but in my area it is quite a bit more expensive than the competition (Time Warner). The first 12 months is about $10/month less than what I pay now, but after 12 months it goes up by a lot. My luck I'll transfer and they will add a cap also.

What does that cost, and how much for overage? I don't necessarily have a problem with caps, but the companies want everything. They want to give you less service for more money. For example, a 5gb cap for Granny to check her email, and watch the occasional YouTube video would be fairly priced at ~$10 per month. What are the odds of that happening?! They want to charge $30 per month for that kind of service, and steeply escalate from there.

Right now in my area (20906) comcast is $70 a month for 20mb/s down and 4mb/s up. with FIOS offering 15 down and 5 up for the same price. (but without stupid bullshit powerboost)

Comcast doesn't appear to have a cap here in IL, but I think I may have been throttled.

I used to get 2.5 MB/sec on Steam downloads, now I don't seem to get any higher than 500 kb/sec.

I never got any notice though. I have been downloading a lot and watching a ton of HD Netflix.

They also don't want another company to be able to come in a offer you better service for a cheaper price.
