Data Buffer Under-runs, What The Hell Is The Problem?

I've got 512 megs DDR ram, and a 1700+ Athlon XP cpu, and an HP 12x4x36x CDRW.

I never can seem to burn at over 4x. Is this a problem with the drive? If I buy another drive, can I actually expect to get the 'max' burn speeds? ie, 12x on a 12x drive, 24x on a 24x, etc..

We need more info...

Such as are you multitasking.... is the drive on the same channel as cdrw etc..

It it a CDRW disc .... don't except it to burn at full speed....it only rated for the max speed on the disc

as for cdr that a different story

It might be that you HD is too slow for data buffering...if not defrag your HD before you start to burn.... less time looking for the data

My CPU and RAM use don't go over 20%. I'm multi-tasking, but that shouldn't matter, the resources are available for the burner if it needs it.

I'm using CDRs.

I would think that there may some problem with your drive. If you get a late model unit you can surely expect to see a vast improvement over that of 4x. When I traded my 12x for a 24x, although my burn speeds were faster, they weren't exactly half of what I had with the 12x...maybe more like 60-80%. If burnproof kicks in then the burn speed obviously goes down also...

At one time I had attempted to move my swap file from on partition to another, but I guess I forgot to press the apply button, so I was running without a swap file for over a week.. I finally realized the little slip up when I wasnt able to burn CD's anymore.

Its a small possibility but perhaps thats your problem? No Swap File?

We're not allowed to say 'hell'? o_O Um, my apologies. I guess.

The swap file is there, and I have no problems at all with other programs.
