Which cable do I need to transfer music from Sony PCM-M1 portable DAT player/recorder to a soundcard in my pc? Where can I get the necessary cable? I've heard that Sony's portable DAT machines use different cables depending on the models.

You need a sound card with digital inputs that can sync up to the 48000 or 44100 Hz data stream from/to the DAT. Something with a C-Media 8738 would be adequate. That chip is highly renouned for excellent loss-free handling of digital sound data. Cards are insanely cheap, around $25 for those that have the optical SPDIF in/out.

Thanks Peter,

I already have a C-Media 8738 based sound card but was wondering about the cable that connects from the DAT to the sound card. Can any mini-plug would do the job? People at DAT-heads said something about a 7-pin cable with Toslink connector (actually I have no idea what they are referring to.... I just want a cable that I can pick up at a local RadioShack).

Well the digital connection uses two standards - optical TOSLINK line, or normal copper wire. If your sound card has optical connectors (usually on a 2nd slot bracket), then use that. Usually these cards include such a cable.
