You can run those speed test ten different times and get ten different speeds. The truth of the pudding is time like a 10mg file and see how long it takes.

I tend to agree with Jagators. The site rated me at 200Mbps but I have on occasion dl'ed large files at 80kbytes/sec.

That's great Danc. But there is something you need to do immediately to preserve that kind of speed with cable. :Q


Convince your entire neighborhood that DSL is the better way to go. Do NOT tell them how much faster your cable is, otherwise, they will join and there goes your bandwidth.



I know, I used to get good times with my cable, but our area has added a lot of new members, now it is slow. Not quite as slow as dial-up, but noticably slower than it used to be.

My cable modem was absolutely smokin' fast when it was first installed about 1.5 years ago. But it slowed down to its current speed after 2 days! Sort of makes me think that the cable company is doing something to artifically limit my speed.

The fastest that I have had on my cable is about 3000 kbps, but one must remember that the servers will have limited bandwidth on the upload due to software settings or the server's bandwidth getting to the 'net.

My cable service got quite slow once. The traffic from the headend maxed out the T1s that they had going to the 'net. They switched to fiber and it was full speed ahead!

BTW, cable subnets may or may not be on a neighborhood basis. When I was installing it, it was almost as important as when you had the service provisioned that determined the subnet.

well i am probably on one of the oldest cable modem areas in michigan, and for on i can tell you my portion of the @home network is a lot more reliable than any other portion of the state, plus i get dl's just as fast if not faster than most other areas that have cable modems. so idunno what is different about my area, but it rocks.

My @home cable has been rocking since I got it. 300+KB/s all day long.

Never been a problem.. Only problem we had was uunet had a bad nic in our connection and caused it to run the speed of a partial t-1 during the day.. That took a full semester to fix..
