And, there you go - this could have been avoided, by giving her something that shoots .22LR ammunition.

.22LR can be made to fire in fully automatic mode. There's even a .22LR Uzi variant just saying pick that caliber by itslef would not have been a sure way to have "avoided" the accident. Although the damage from a .22LR would have been considerably less than a 9MM, if the instructor got shot in the head due to muzzle rise in auto mode it probably wouldn't have mattered anyway.

At such a young age, I would think top priority would be to teach her aiming properly, familiarize with the kick back, how to properly place the butt of the weapon against your shoulder, don't pull the trigger with your entire finger, etc. and,... full auto would be turned off.

But, what is done is done, unfortunately. And, I don't foresee any rabble rousing to ban children from gun ranges - nor should there be, ever.

If anything, I hope other instructors would ensure they don't allow children to shoot guns that most likely will lose control over and keep full auto off. If the parent doesn't ask for .22LR ammo, then it would be wise for the instructor(s) to insist in doing so. Or, make it their policy, etc.

He handed a fully automatic gun to a child, then just stood there. Maybe if he did his job right then he'd be alive, but he died from an acute case of being a dumbass.

As a child that's what I was trained to shoot with. Only one round in the gun too.

I assume that the instructor was inadequately trained. Adults have accidentally killed themselves when shooting a gun with a lot of kick. A few yrs ago a guy in a city near me killed himself when shooting a Desert Eagle .50 AE. The recoil brought it up to his face and he accidentally fired again shooting himself in the face.

The instructor should have been aware of this possibility.

Even with Squad Automatic Weapons they teach you to use controlled bursts about 3 rounds each.

The problem I see with this instructor is that he didn't seem to give the 9 year old anything more than rudimentary training. If that.
I have no idea why he would put a weapon that full grown inexperienced adults can have issues controlling full auto in the hands of a 9 year old without taking more precautions.

Maybe he was used to this way of supervising young shooters and his luck ran out.

A large caliber single action revolver would probably have been safer for the 9 year old to fire while still providing some of the "oooooh" factor.
 
I am still trying to wrap my brain around the idea that it is entertainment for a nine years old to shoot an automatic weapon. So many fails by so many people before the final fail, which is the instructor ended up with a bullet in the head.

That's probability for you, too many stupid acts strung together will greatly increase the chance of a disaster.

Kinda hard to teach someone how to shoot if they literally can't hit anything they're shooting at. Would be like teaching someone how to drive without shifting out of Neutral.

The issue here isn't kids with guns, it's stupid adults giving kids guns they have no business shooting. I shot a bolt action .22 as a 6th grade Boy Scout with no issue. That's what you give a kid.

How exactly did he not deserve a body full of bullets when handing a child a fully automatic weapon and did nothing to prevent an accident?
 
I really fail to see a problem here. Yes, the parents were perhaps* fools, and the instructor was definitely a fool, but people are allowed to be fools and sadly that sometimes has tragic consequences.

*If the parents were not knowledgeable about guns then they (probably) did not know how dangerous it was to allow a child to shoot that weapon.

Maybe just maybe those dumbasses shouldn't have the right to procreate to begin with. For that instructor, he was a definitive dumbass, not by my opinion but by his own action.

Or rather as an example of why you shouldn't give certain firearms to individuals such as 9 year olds to shoot.... As I've said before a single action high caliber revolver would arguably have been safer in her hands.
