Two men riding a lawn mower down the center of a highway at night were rear-ended by a semitrailer, killing one of the men.
James L. Arthur Jr., 23, and David C. Bartley, 22, both of Goshen, were driving the garden tractor down the center of Indiana 15 with no lights or reflectors when the accident occurred at about 3 a.m. Sunday, sheriff's investigators said.
Elkhart County coroner Dr. Jeff Landrum said Arthur died from injuries to the head and chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bartley was taken to Goshen General Hospital, where doctors determined his blood-alcohol level was 0.23 percent, sheriff's investigators said. He was later released from the hospital.
Arthur's blood-alcohol level was not released, and police said they could not immediately determine who was driving the tractor.
The semitrailer driver, identified as Cecil D. Miller, 60, of Akron, Ind., was uninjured.
Miller told investigators he did not see the garden tractor until the last second, and was unable to avoid rear-ending it.
