Darwin FTW?

How far would you want darwin theory to be taken? Should we not have any safety procautions for things since if you die, you deserve to die? Do you believe people should take medicine or should we wait until someone/generation evolves and isn't bothered/afflicted with a particular ailment? What are your thoughts?

I'm sure if I post my thoughts I'll definately get flamed so instead I'm asking of others to post their thoughts, if they get flamed, so be it..

I think we've taken warning labels a bit far. Medicine's fine IMO; we're done evolving naturally, and indeed are beginning to devolve. Technology is the future of our evolution.

The evolution of the mind and society is the next logical step in "evolution".

Physically we are all but done evolving.

We still are using selectionism to evolve. Instead of competing with nature though, we've transcended that and we're using eugenics instead.

Agreed. Medicine is just part of another evolutionary step, using surrounding materials to stay alive...

Of course humans are still evolving. Different humans are passing down their genes at different rates and mutations are inherent in this process.

I think what people really mean when they say we are not evolving is that they aren't sure where we are headed genetically. This is understandable because it's difficult for us to deal with such long processes, in which our lives are mere blips on the radar.

Medicine doesn't stop evolution. It's just a tool human's have used to better survive in their environment. It's just like any other species passing beneficial knowledge from generation to generation.

I think all this cavalier talk of "Darwin at work" is done by people who either don't have loved ones being allowed to live a long normal life due to the advances in medicine or have not themselves been the beneficiary of the wonders of modern medicine.

You have to distinguish between evolutionary theory and social Darwinism(actually, as it happens, named for Darwin but largely concocted by Spencer and his school). The former is effectively scientific fact. The farther we can push it, the more cute results it leads us to. The latter is, at best, one possible approach to social engineering.

That isn't a part of evolution. Evolutionary theory, like all scientific theories, says nothing about what "deserves" to happen, or more generally, what "ought" to happen. Rather, scientific theories only describe what does happen.

I think individuals should be free to take, or not take, medicine as they desire. Of course, this is my own personal belief, and not some derivation from any scientific theory.
