It's not a lighter, it's a cell phone. We viewed this video in a safety class. The ignition source was static from his clothing, generated as he reached into his pocket, then sparked when he reached back toward the hatch. He should have maintained contact with the tank and also grounded the truck before dinking with it.

OK, that makes more sense than a lighter. I don't understand what he was doing up there anyway. Don't they just connect the hose under the tanker, and open the valve?

What does that have to do with static electricity? He's not claiming that the cellphone caused this, just that this was the Item In Pocket.

Who uses a lighter to illuminate things these days? I could navigate the Universe with just a bright cell phone screen backlight.
