C'mon... the railroad crossing sign was down for 3 hours.
I know I've sat at a crossing before, waited a few minutes, then decided to cross the tracks.
Of course, I'm smart enough to look both ways before crossing.

Crossing gates *do* break from time to time.

It was closed for three hours after Darwin fumbled this guy. No mention that it was closed inordinately long before he tried to beat the train.

He told police he saw a northbound car drive around the gates and then he looked for westbound trains, telling police the morning trains usually come from that direction.

But he said he did not look the other way.

How lazy do you have to be to not look both ways? :Q
