An Atlanta man died overnight in Gwinnett County after apparently swallowing a bag of suspected cocaine, police said.
Dexter Deanthony Grier, 24, died after a traffic stop near Norcross, said Gwinnett police Cpl. Dan Huggins.
When a Gwinnett police DUI Task Force officer tried to pull Grier over, he slowed to 5 mph and continued to drive for about a mile before stopping at Peachtree Industrial and Jimmy Carter boulevards, Huggins said.
"The officer determined that there was probable cause to arrest Grier for DUI," Huggins said.
Huggins said the officer handcuffed Grier and put him in the back seat of the patrol car, then began an impound inventory of Grier's vehicle.
"When the officer returned to his patrol car, the officer noticed that Grier was sweating profusely and was becoming unresponsive," Huggins said.
The suspect "apparently had eaten or ingested a bag of what we believe to be cocaine," Huggins said. "We don't know whether the drugs got into his system or whether the bag got lodged in his throat but he asphyxiated on it."
Grier was taken to Dunwoody Medical Center, where he later died.
