Apparently the hapless Mr Strawberry was just arrested in FL. No word yet on what he was arrested for, although I'm guessing crack and/or hookers may have been involved.

Edit: the story so far.

<< Darryl Strawberry has reportedly been arrested in Marion County, Florida, though it's not yet known what for.

The former New York Yankee and eight-time All-Star was undergoing rehabilitation for substance abuse at the Phoenix House.

Last May, Strawberry was spared imprisonment when a judge sentenced him to a drug treatment center for violating his probation during a four-day drug binge.

"You are at bat in the bottom of the ninth with two strikes against you. You are a proven winner on the field. Now you must prove you are a winner off the field," Circuit Judge Florence Foster said.

Strawberry, who wore a dark button-down shirt, showed little emotion as he learned his fate. Earlier, he had asked the judge for leniency.

"This case is not about Darryl Strawberry the baseball player. This is about a person who is very sick," Strawberry said. "I just thank God I'm alive today to be in front of you to deal with the situation."

Strawberry, whose struggles with drug addiction, cancer and depression have been played out in a painfully public display, disappeared from a Tampa drug treatment center March 29 for a four-day drug binge. He resurfaced and checked himself into the psychiatric ward of a Tampa hospital, where he has been since.

<< And this suprises you how? >>

That was kinda the point....it doesn't.

<< doesn't he have a medical condition as well? >>

He's had recurring colon cancer. I'm sure the crack is to help medicate this....kinda like Curt Kobain needing heroin for his stomach pains.

And we're suppose to care? The guy may have been a great baseball player, but he's a near worthless human for never even truly trying to kick his drug habit! Let him dry up like a piece of dog crap and blow away!

I'd like to see you get off crack after you've started. How do you know he hasn't truly tried? Crack is one of the most addictive substances on the planet

its really a sad story...he had everything going for him, could have been a 1st time Hall of Famer, but he was brought into a Mets Clubhouse with Dwight Gooden both before they were 21, which was filled with drugs and both of them became hooked...they were both able to last for a while, but then the drugs got both of them

Thankfully at least one of them, gooden, was able to kick the habit and come back and show that he could still dominate the league and he will become a hall of famer, but strawberry was just in to deep.

I dont think strawberry is a bad guy...just screwed up his life...this will be the last time we hear of him for a whil though, i am sure that he will be imprisoned now.

Not to get off on a tangent, but Dwight Gooden does not deserve to be in the HOF. Look at his career stats. Don't get me wrong, he was the man for about a five year span but he doesn't even have 200 wins to his credit and he only won 20 games in a season once.

And regarding Mr. Strawberry, he has problems. It never ceases to amaze me how much these professional atheletes continue to screw their lives up with drugs, etc. Look at the news today; more charges for Jayson Williams, Ruben Rivera released for stealing Jeter's glove and selling it. Unbelievable..

With all due respect, imagine if it was your Mother/Father/Sister/Brother/Son/ or Daughter. Still feel the same?

Yes, I'd still feel the same. He's as bad as Robert Downey Jr. I have no time, no respect and no care for what happens to these gifted individuals that completely screw up their lives with drugs and get waaaay too many chances to rehab themselves only to make the court systems look like idiots!

Do you feel that if one is 'gifted' that they owe it to society - more so than others - to not screw up? Strawberry is a person first, athlete second.

If someone I knew was constantly reaching rock bottom, the last thing I'd ever do is give up on them. I think Strawberry is no different.

Strawberry hit rockbottom, was handed a life preserver and decided to keep digging. I've had a handful of friends that have been alcoholics and drug addicts (Yes, I know how addicting crack is!) that I didn't give up on but when they hit rock bottom they cleaned themselves up. How many chances has this worthless POS been given?

Everyone makes mistakes, and unless you are prepared to judge yourself as well, I suggest you don't others.

Ok, so he's worthless because he doesn't have as strong of a will as your friends? I am amazed at how judgmental everyone is

you are just now amazed by this? and just realized this? have you read any other thread on this board dealing with a controversial topic. heck even some of the non-controversial ones have everyone judging something. i find it hard to believe that you don't judge anyone, at any time, any where.

He's worthless becauase he'as been given chances and order to rehab how many f-ing times and basically has no care that he was given those chances. He's under the impression that his money and fame will buy him out of every jam he gets into. He needs a judge that says lock him up until he's clean and once again a productive part of society. Until the, he's a worthless piece of crap!

I said it in this thread because the amounts of it was shocking. Yes, most threads have their share of judgemental people, but stuff like "publicly stone him!" or "let him dry up like a piece of dog cr*p" is too much.

<< i find it hard to believe that you don't judge anyone, at any time, any where. >>

We all judge other's some time or another, but that doesn't make it right. I try to keep it to a minimum, and if I do go over the line I attempt to apologize.

You have no idea what his mindset is, and any statements you make about him are merely assumptions. While I agree that he needs a different type of treatment, IMHO being sent to jail is not the answer

i dont think anyone is saying that he shouldnt be in jail...he messed up...he deserves to be there now and will be...i think most people on here just think its sad that it had to come to this, instead of your being mad at him...we just feel sorry for him...just different way of thinkin, but we all know he belongs in jail now

Not the answer? Then what if he so happens to be high as a kite driving down the road and slams his useless as# into a car with your kids, or whatever in it? Still gonna want to reach out and help him? Put his dumb butt in jail before he injures someone else or himself.
Go visit him if it will make you feel better. Tell him that I said hi.

*sigh* just because I said that I thought going to jail was not going to rehabilitate him did not mean the answer was to set him free. Please people, for the sake of everyone, stop acting on assumptions

<< Timeline of events that make him a worthless piece of crap >>

This does not prove that he is a 'worthless piece of crap'; only that he has had a large deal of problems during the course of his life and needs serious help
