Heat is actually a byproduct of inefficiency. Pushing a rock on the ground produces more heat than rolling a wheel but it does less work.

I'd say the 8800GTS512 is a wise choice. It's a good time to get one, the prices have dropped quite a bit since X-mas, and nothing newer or much faster coming out anytime soon. It's about as fast a card as you'll need, the 8800GTX and Ultra aren't much faster, but it's noticably faster than a 9600GT. I'd say it's the sweet spot buy right now, course that's just my opinion, and cuz I just installed mine yesterday.

Go talk to a physicist or an engineer. Heat = inefficiency, because power that could be used to accomplish work is instead being used to generate heat.
